New York, New York – The City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) announced its 2023-24 Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll for the Winter and Spring sports seasons on Tuesday afternoon, giving out 544 citations for academic excellence in the classroom for the Spring 2023 semester. The BMCC student-athletes delivered again for a second straight semester to close out the 2023-24 Athletic season, with 13 Panthers landing on the CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll.
For the second straight season, BMCC Athletics produced 30 or more CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selections during the 2023-24 Athletic Season, with 32 total between both seasons after
a league-best 19 Panther student-athletes landed on the Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll during the fall.
"Having 25% of our student-athletes achieve CUNYAC Academic Honors during the 2023-24 season is a great feat," said
Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC. "The work put in by the students in collaboration with the resources on campus show what our student-athletes are truly capable of. I look forward to seeing that number continue to grow in the years to come."
The CUNYAC Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll is constructed with student-athletes across 13 member campuses who participate in a varsity-level sport and have a 3.2 GPA or better on a 4.0 scale. The list includes sports that held their championships in the winter or spring (men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming, men's and women's indoor and outdoor track and field, men's volleyball, baseball, and softball).

CUNYAC student-athletes continue to rise to the challenge and thrive in the classroom," said
CUNYAC Associate Director for Operations Kim Wright. "Congratulations to our honorees as they continue to put in championship performances on and off their respective playing surface."
The
BMCC men's volleyball led the way for the Panthers with three selections on the 2023-24 Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll, while Baseball, Women's Basketball, and Women's Outdoor Track and Field all had two.
Lea Reimer (Paderborn, Germany) and
Trent Santoro (Queens, New York) picked up Winter and Spring Honor Roll honors for the Indoor & Outdoor Track seasons.
God'slove Ukpe (Port Harcout, Nigeria) was the lone representative from the BMCC Men's Basketball team.
Reimer carried the torch in the classroom for all student-athletes and the indoor and outdoor program, with a program-best 3.86 GPA, while
Miguel Trejo (Brooklyn, New York) led the way for the Men's Volleyball team with a 3.83 GPA,
Taino Rodriguez and
Eboney McClellan (Brooklyn, New York) were both tops for
BMCC Baseball and Women's Basketball with a 3.73 and 3.36 GPA.
Trejo,
a 2024 All-Region 15 Sportsmanship Team honoree, was second on the Panthers this season with 36 assists, headlined by a career night to end the regular season with a
game and career-high 18 assists and 11 digs, which was also a career-best against Kingsborough Community College on March 28, 2024, while
Emmanuel Lovingood (Queens, New York) led the Panthers from the
backline with a
team-best 24 service aces with a career-best seven aces against Middlesex County College while ranking second in blocks with 19 and third in kills with 43.
Adesina Adewumi played in six matches during the Panther's inaugural 2024 season with
a career-high four kills in the Panther's season-finale four-set victory over Kingsborough Community College on March 28, 2024.
Reimer added to her accolade-filled freshman season during the Winter and Spring seasons, picking up CUNYAC Community College All-Star honors for the
second and
third time after
earning two medals for first-place finishes in the women's mile and 3000 meters with times of 5:55.59 and 12:26.51 at the 2024 CUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships and
taking the top spot in the women's 10,000 meters at the Outdoor Championships. The Paderborn, Germany native was the first female runner in
program history to qualify for Nationals with a
personal record in the Queensborough Relays with a time of 43.31.47 and a second-place finish in the 10,000 meter run and capped off the outdoor season
by becoming the program's first-ever USTFCCCA (United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) All-American selection, with an eighth-place finish at the 2024 NJCAA Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships. The outdoor track and field program's second Winter/Spring Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll selection,
Maria Godoy Forno De Stein (Guatemala City, Guatemala), posted two personal bests in the
2024 Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships in the women's 200 and 400 meters, with times of 31.30 and 1:10.01.
Santoro, who
became the second-ever student-athlete in BMCC history to receive CSC (College Sports Communicators) Academic All-District® College Division At-Large team honors last week, kept it on that dial during the men's indoor and outdoor track and field seasons, finishing in the
top 10 in the men's mile with a sixth-place finish and a career-best time of 5:11.16 during the
2024 CUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships and followed it up with two more top 10 finishes during the
2024 CUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing sixth and ninth with times of 4:45.12 and 2:19.04 in the men's 1500 meter and 800 meter runs, his 1500 meter mark being a new personal best.
Baseball's
Peter Marino (New York, New York), who finished behind
Rodriguez with a 3.38 GPA
, was the Panther's go-to player on the mound, posting a
team-leading and season-best 29 strikeouts, with 19 of them in their only two victories during the 2024 season. The New York, New York native also posted
a career-high 10 strikeouts during a 9-4 win over Bronx Community College on April 6, 2024, the program's
first double-digit strikeout effort since the 2018 season, earning him
CUNYAC Pitcher of the Week accolades.
Marino received
2024 CUNYAC Community College All-Star accolades and finished his
Panther career third all-time with 46 career strikeouts.
Marino also concluded his Panther career
third all-time in career steals with 30 and ranked in the top ten in three other offensive categories with
33 career hits, five career doubles, which are eighth all-time, and
16 career RBIs, tied for 10th all-time.
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) was one of the two women's basketball players to receive Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll accolades and did it for the second straight season with a 3.3 GPA. Kennedy finished her BMCC women's basketball career as the second player in program history to reach 700 points, finishing second in school history with 705 career points, just five shy of tying the all-time record holder Fanta Sissoko. The two-time CUNYAC Community College All-Star and 2023-24 All-Region 15 Second Team selection also ranked in the top ten nationally in three categories, with her 5.5 steals per game, 116 steals, and 5.5 assists per game being good for second, fourth, and sixth in the country. Her 432 points and 20.6 points per game average were also 11th and 12th in the country. Kennedy also ended her career as a Panther in the top three in all-time program history in two other categories, ranking second all-time in school history with 166 career steals and 152 career assists. Her 322 career rebounds are the seventh most in program history, while her team-leading 116 steals and 115 assists are also the second and third most in a single season, while her 432 points are the fourth most. The Brooklyn, New York native also became the first Panther player in nine seasons since Kristen Merrell to post a triple-double with 16 points, a game-high 10 assists, and 10 rebounds during the Panther's dominant 82-25 over Roxbury Community College on January 20, 2024, and posted a team-leading four triple doubles on the season.
Ukpe played in four games for the Panthers, scoring
three points in the season opener against Middlesex County College on November 4, 2023.
Hunter produced a conference-leading 122 honorees among the senior colleges, followed by John Jay (78) and CCNY (74). Baruch finished with 70 citations, followed by Brooklyn (57), Lehman (53), Medgar Evers (23) and York (14).
Queensborough Community College paced the community colleges with a conference-best 19 selections, while BMCC finished second with 13 honorees. Kingsborough Community College followed in third with 10 honorees, while Bronx Community College and Hostos rounded it out with six and five selections.
Dating back to the fall, a grand total of 902 student-athletes earned CUNYAC Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll recognition.
