New York, New York - Borough of Manhattan Community College men's cross country and track and field runner Trent Santoro (Queens, New York) added another accolade to his outstanding athletic and academic resume at 199 Chambers Street, becoming the second-ever Panther student-athlete in school history selected to the CSC (College Sports Communicators) Academic All-District® College Division At-Large team for the 2023-24 season. Santoro, who was one of three CUNY two-year athletes to earn the honor, makes it back-to-back CSC (College Sports Communicators) Academic All-District® selections for the Panther's Athletic program after El Hadji Ady Gaye (Dakar, Senegal) became the first in school history to accomplish it last year.
In addition, Santoro has a chance to give BMCC two consecutive CSC (College Sports Communicators) Academic All-America winners, as he is now eligible to be nominated for the highly prestigious CSC Academic All-America team.
The CSC Academic All-District® College Division At-Large Team recognizes student-athletes from all sponsored sports two-year colleges, Canadian Institutions, and any other institution not affiliated with the NCAA or the NAIA. Student-athletes must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.50 or better at their current institution, be a prominent contributor on their team, compete in at least 50 percent of their team's scheduled competitions, and complete at least one full calendar year at their current academic institution while being on a college roster in that sport for two years.
"As an Athletic Director, there is nothing better than the tremendous year our student-athletes have had in the classroom this past year," said
Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC. "Trent embodies what it is to be a student-athlete, and his academic and athletic prowess is second to none. It was an honor to watch Trent succeed at a high level on the field, track, and classroom. He has set a high bar for what we want all our student-athletes to achieve."
Santoro was exceptional in the classroom during his sophomore year at BMCC, owning a stellar 3.76 GPA as a Math & Science for Secondary Education major. Off the course and track, the three-time Dean's List recipient and gifted mathematics and physics student utilizes those talents as a BMCC Academic Tutor to help his peers in and out of class.
Santoro has been one of the staples of the BMCC Cross Country and Track and Field programs over his two years with the Athletic Program, helping both capture major accolades during Cross Country's inaugural 2022-23 season and Track and Field's first season in 2023-24.
Santoro became the first cross-country runner in school history to earn a medal at the
2022 Region 15 Championships, placing in the top seven in the 8K. As a sophomore, he also became one of the program's
first-ever top-ten finishers in school history with a fourth-place finish and a time of 34:26.90 in the 8K at the Medgar Evers College Legacy Invitational. He also posted his
second straight top 20 finish in the Conference Cross Country Championships, crossing the tape in 17th with a time of 32:18.
The Queens, New York native kept it on that dial during the Indoor and Outdoor Track and Field seasons, finishing in the
top ten in the men's mile with a sixth-place finish and a career-best time of 5:11.16 during the 2024 CUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships and following it up with two more top 10 finishes during the 2024
CUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing sixth and ninth with times of 4:45.12 and 2:19.04 in the men's 1500 meter and 800 meter runs, his 1500 meter mark being a new personal best.
Santoro finished his cross-country and Track and Field careers at BMCC with four top 10 finishes.
The national ballot for the 2023-24 CSC Academic All-America® College Division At-Large Team officially opens with Tuesday's announcement of the Academic All-District® Team. In addition, the 2023-24 CSC Academic All-America® College Division At-Large Men's Team will be revealed on Wednesday, July 17th.
