New York, New York – The NJCAA Region XV All-Region Team selections were announced on Monday, and sophomore guard
Jeremiah Cardi (New York, New York) picked up his second All-Region XV Second Team honor after his outstanding effort during the 2022-23 season, while
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) was also named to the All-Region 15 sportsmanship team.
"I am extremely grateful for this award," says
Cardi. "It's a great feeling knowing that my hard work is paying off, and this award is very special because this is my second year in a row being recognized, and I am thankful to my coaching staff and teammates."
Head Coach Tommy Keenan was thrilled for Cardi and raved about the leadership he has provided for the program.
"Miah, has been the blood & soul of this basketball program for two straight years. He is our hardest work!! He's the first guy in the gym & the last to leave," says Keenan. "As a freshman, he was asked to do a lot. He was forced to play the point last year, which was not his true position, but thanks to our more talented roster this season, he was asked to do as much as he did a year ago. With that said, he still had an All-CUNY & All-Region XV season. Miah became a better on-ball defender this season & he learned how to become a better screener & move without the ball." "I'll be sad when he's gone because he's helped put BMCC Basketball back on the map."
Last week, Cardi and two other teammates were named CUNYAC All-Stars, making it the first time in 21 years that the BMCC men's basketball program had three players named CUNYAC All-Stars. The sophomore guard also picked up his second CUNYAC All-Star selection after grabbing it after the 2021-22 regular season.
Cardi has been the heart and soul of the BMCC men's basketball program and an integral part in helping turn the Panther's basketball program coming out of the pandemic leading them to double-digit victories coming out of the pandemic for the first time in two seasons with 11 on the year. The New York, New York native also led the Panthers this season in assists (68), three-pointers made (28), three-pointers attempted (97), free throws made (60), and free throws attempted (80).
The
two-time CUNYAC Player of the Week was also second in free throw shooting (75%) and has scored in double figures in 13 games and reaching the 20-point mark in two, including a season-high 29 points against Hostos Community College on December 8, 2022.
Cardi also registered a season-high this season in scoring with 266 points and 11.6 points per game while tied ninth with 53 career threes made and 15th in program history with 498 career points.
The BMCC men's basketball program felt
Marte's impact from the moment he stepped on campus, leading the Panthers in total points with 273 points with a team-best 16 double-figure games, including 13 of them in his last 14 contests and four 20-point scoring performances and 111 field goals made and 234 field goals attempted. The Bronx, New York native is also second in scoring average at 11.9 points per game.
The
four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, including a back-to-back winner
on December 19 and 27, also
leads the Panthers defensively with 51 steals with a career-best five steals twice
against Bronx Community College and
Hostos Community College.
Marte is also third in free throws made (41) and free throws attempted (58), and assists (35).
The Panthers head into the 2023 Region 15 quarterfinals as the #6 seed. They will battle #3-seed Dutchess Community College for the third time this season on Wednesday, March 1, at 7 p.m. in Poughkeepsie, New York. This game was moved due to weather and for more information, visit the
