New York, New York – After registering two 20-point performances last week against Laguardia Community College in conference play last Tuesday, freshmen
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and Demaris Andrews (Bayonne, New Jersey) from the BMCC men's and women's basketball teams were named CUNYAC CC Rookie of the Week by the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) on Monday.
The honor is
Marte's second straight, and he joins Andrews in picking up the nod for the third time this season.
Marte continued to elevate his play off a strong performance last week, smashing his previous career-high with a
new one last Tuesday with 20 points during an 80-64 victory over Laguardia C.C. in their final contest of the 2022 calendar year.
The Harry S. Truman High School product has also recorded back-to-back double-figure scoring performances, with three of his five double-figure games coming during the Panther's season-high six-game winning streak, their longest since the 2018-19 season.
The Bronx, New York native recorded 16 of his career-high 20 points in the first half while grabbing four rebounds and two steals while dishing out an assist.
Marte has played a major role in leading BMCC to a perfect 5-0 record in CUNYAC play, winning their first five conference games for the first time in four seasons.
During the Panther's six-game winning streak,
Marte has averaged 11.2 points per game and 4.7 rebounds per game while grabbing 2.2 steals per game, with two or more in five of his last six games. The freshman guard has also found his stroke over the previous six games shooting 50% from the field (29-58 FG).
Andrews continued to add to her outstanding freshman campaign with her team-leading fifth 20-point game of the season and second straight double-figure scoring game during the Panther's loss 48-43 to Laguardia Community College. After being held off the scoreboard in the first half, she exploded in the second half scoring all 20 points on the night to help her team mount a strong rally after being down 16 at halftime.
The Bayonne, New Jersey, missed her team-leading third double-double by two rebounds with eight on the night while tying for team-best in steals with four.
The Hudson Catholic High School product leads the Panthers offensively in points (167), scoring average (16.7 PPG), field goals made (47), field goals attempted (181), free throws made (62), and free throws attempted (97) while dishing out a team-best 12 assists. Andrews is also BMCC's defensive leader in rebounds (76), rebounding average (7.6), steals (22), and steals per game (2.2), to go along with team-high two blocks.
The Panthers men's basketball team kicks off the New Year looking to extend their winning streak to seven games against Essex County College on Tuesday, January 10, at BMCC Gymnasium. BMCC women's basketball returns to action at home against CUNYAC opponent Kingsborough Community College on Saturday, January 14, at BMCC Gymnasium.
