Brooklyn, New York - For the first time in two years, the City University of New York Athletic Conference (CUNYAC) held its annual All-Star Basketball Luncheon at Giando's on the Water in Brooklyn, New York, and BMCC Men's Basketball made a statement boasting three CUNYAC All-Stars for the first time since the 2001-02 season. Sophomore Jeremiah Cardi (New York, New York) picked up the second CUNYAC All-Star nod of his career, while freshmen
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and
Daniel Laffitte (New York, New York) earned their first.
Marte also landed on the All-Sportsmanship team.
In two seasons at BMCC,
Cardi has played an integral part in helping turn the Panther's basketball program around coming out of the pandemic two years ago. The guard from New York, New York
leads the Panthers this season in assists (67), three-pointers made (27), three-pointers attempted (91), free throws made (60), and free throws attempted (80).
The two-time CUNYAC Player of the Week is also second in free throw shooting (75%) and third in steals (38) while scoring in double figures in 12 games and reaching the 20-point mark in two, including a season-high 29 points against Hostos Community College on December 8, 2022. Cardi also registered a season-high this season in scoring with 255 points and 11.6 points per game while ranking 10th in 52 career threes made and 15th in program history with 487 career points.
Marte has burst on the scene during his first season with the men's basketball program leading the Panthers in scoring with 273 points and 12.4 points per game while knocking down a team-best 111 field goals on a team-high 234 attempts.
The four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, including a back-to-back winner on December 19 and 27, also leads the Panthers defensively with 51 steals with a career-best five assists twice against Bronx Community College and Hostos Community College. Marte is also second in free throws made (41) and free throws attempted (58). and third in free throw shooting percentage (70.7%) and assists (35).
The Bronx, New York native has been the most consistent player during the second half of the season for the Panthers scoring in double-figures 13 straight times dating back to 2022 and posting a team-high 16 double-figure games and four 20-point scoring performances with a career-high 23 points twice this season against Queensborough Community College on January 31, 2023, and Hostos Community College on February 7, 2023.
Laffitte has had an excellent start to his career at 199 Chambers Street, ranking second on the team in three-pointers made (19) and three-pointers attempted (76) while also ranking third in scoring (225), scoring average (11.8), rebounds (122), rebounding average (6.4), field goals made (86), field goals attempted (198). In addition, the New York, New York native scored in double figures 13 times this season to go along with two double-doubles.
The two-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week dropped a career-high 23 points against Hostos Community College on December 8, 2022, during the Panther's five-game win streak to close out 2022. Laffitte also hauled down a career-high 17 rebounds against Bronx Community College on February 9, 2023.
