Flushing, New York – On Thursday, The City University of New York Athletic Conference recognized their Scholar-Athletes of the Year for the 2023-2024 season for their excellence in athletics and the classroom at the 37th edition of the CUNYAC Michael Steuerman Scholar-Athlete Awards Dinner at Terrace on the Park. Sophomores Trent Santoro (Queens, New York) from BMCC's men's cross country and track and field and men's soccer's Hamilton Azon received Scholar-Athlete of The Year Honorable Mention accolades by the CUNY Athletic Conference.
"Trent and Hamilton embody what it is to be a student-athlete, and their academic and athletic prowess is second to none," said Matthew Ruiz, Director of Athletics & Recreation at BMCC. "It was an honor to watch Trent and Hamilton succeed at a high level on the field, track, and classroom. Both have set a high bar for what we want all our student-athletes to achieve."
Santoro has been exceptional in the classroom, owning a stellar 3.64 GPA at BMCC as an Math & Science for Secondary Education major. Off the field, the three-time Dean's List recipient is a gifted mathematics and physics student who utilizes those talents as a BMCC Academic Tutor to help his peers in and out of class.
Santoro was one of the staples of the BMCC Cross Country program that began competition a year ago, making history during the fall, becoming one of the program's first-ever top-ten finishers in school history with a fourth-place finish and a time of 34:26.90 in the 8K at the Medgar Evers College Legacy Invitational. He also posted his second straight top 20 finish in the Conference Cross Country Championships, crossing the tape in 17th with a time of 32:18. The Queens, New York native also brought it at the CUNYAC Indoor Track and Field Championships, where he finished in the top ten in the men's mile with a sixth-place finish and a career-best time of 5:11.16. Santoro placed in the top 10 at the 2024 CUNYAC Outdoor Track and Field Championships, finishing sixth and ninth with times of 4:45.12 and 2:19.04 in the men's 1500 meter and 800 meter runs, his 1500 meter mark being a new personal best.
Azon, a two-year BMCC men's soccer team member, registered an outstanding 3.66 GPA as a Business Administration major while at BMCC. Azon was also a member of back-to-back CUNYAC Championships in 2022 and 2023 for the BMCC men's soccer program when they notched their league-best 13th and 14th titles in school history.
Azon, also a Dean's List recipient, graduated from BMCC with honors.
