New York, New York – For the first time since 2020, Borough of Manhattan Community College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2022-23 season, with nine sports represented. Each Top-10 moment voted by our athletics staff will be unveiled, with a recap every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks, culminating with our top moment of the 2022-23 athletic year, released Thursday, August 31st.
No. 6 – BMCC Men's Basketball Produces Three CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball All-Stars For The First Time in 21 Years
We return with moment No. 6 of the 2022-23 BMCC Athletics Top-10 with BMCC men's basketball capturing three CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball All-Star honorees for the first time since the 2001-02 season as sophomore
Jeremiah Cardi (New York, New York) and freshmen
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) and
Daniel Laffitte (New York, New York) all
received Conference All-Star Accolades.
During his two seasons at
BMCC,
Cardi played an integral part in helping turn the Panther's basketball program around coming out of the pandemic two years ago, leading them to double-digit victories for the first time in two seasons with 11 on the year after just two wins a season ago. The guard from New York, New York led the Panthers this season in assists (68), three-pointers made (28), three-pointers attempted (97), free throws made (60), and free throws attempted (80).
The
two-time CUNYAC Player of the Week was also second in free throw shooting (75%) and has scored in double figures in 13 games and reaching the 20-point mark in two, including a season-high 29 points against Hostos Community College on December 8, 2022. Cardi also registered a season-high in points and scoring average during the 2022-23 season with 266 points and 11.6 points per game while tying ninth all-time with 53 career threes made and 15th in program history with 498 career points.
The BMCC men's basketball program felt Marte's impact from the moment he stepped on campus, as he led the Panthers in total points with 273 points and registered a team-best 16 double-figure games, including 13 of them in his last 14 contests and four 20-point scoring performances and 111 field goals made and 234 field goals attempted. The Bronx, New York native is also second in scoring average at 11.9 points per game.
The
four-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week, including a back-to-back winner
on December 19 and 27, also
led the Panthers defensively with 51 steals with a career-best five steals twice
against Bronx Community College and
Hostos Community College.
Marte was also third in free throws made (41) and free throws attempted (58), and assists (35).
Laffitte put together an outstanding season on 199 Chambers Street for the Panthers, ranking second in scoring average (12.1), three-pointers made (24), and three-pointers attempted (87). He also ranked third in total points (254), rebounds (132), field goals made (96), and field goals attempted (224). In addition, the New York, New York native scored in double figures 15 times, including six in his final eight games during the 2022-23 season, with two double-doubles.
The
two-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week dropped
a career-high 23 points against Hostos Community College on December 8, 2022, during the Panther's five-game win streak to close out 2022.
Laffitte also hauled down a career-high 17 rebounds against Bronx Community College on February 9, 2023.
