New York, New York – The CUNY Athletic Conference announced the weekly awards for CUNYAC CC Baseball on Monday. BMCC freshman center fielder Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) was recognized as the league's Rookie of the Week after his performance in the Panther's season-opening doubleheader yesterday. Mattera grabs his first Rookie of the Week accolade of the season and the program's second straight after teammate Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) received the honor on April 25, 2022. 
 
During BMCC's two games yesterday against non-conference opponent Bergen County Community College, Mattera put together a strong debut in his first action as a Panther, going 3-for-6 overall and hitting .500 with a team-leading four runs scored and three hits. The Moorpark, California native went 1-3 in the first game of the doubleheader driving in BMCC's first run on a sacrifice fly. Mattera helped the Panthers take an early 1-0 lead on 400 foot solo home run in game two. He was a crucial part of the Panther's seventh-inning surge during their comeback that fell short, recording one of his two hits in the second game and scoring his team-best third run.
 
He currently leads the Panthers in runs scored with four and a 1.000 slugging percentage while he is tied for first with three hits, and his two RBIs are tied for second.
 
The Panthers look to get their first win of the season tomorrow in their home opener on Tuesday, March 21, against CUNYAC opponent Queensborough Community College at 3:30 p.m. from Padavan-Preller Complex. For more information, please visit the BMCC Baseball Schedule Page.
