New York, New York – For the first time since 2020, Borough of Manhattan Community College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2022-23 season, with nine sports represented.
Each Top-10 moment voted by our athletics staff will be unveiled, with a recap every Tuesday and Thursday for the next five weeks, culminating with our top moment of the 2022-23 athletic year, released Thursday, August 31st.
No. 10 – Trent Santoro and Gabriele Dos Santos Mello Capture Medals At 2022 Region 15 Championships
Leading off at No. 10 in our 2022-23 Top-10 Moments is BMCC men's and women's cross country freshmen
Trent Santoro and
Gabriele Dos Santos Mello (New York, New York)'s performance at
the 2022 Region 15 Championships.
Santoro and Dos Santos Mello held their own against a highly competitive field at the Region 15 Championships earning medals for placing in the top seven in the 8k and 5k.
Santoro led the Men finishing 36th with a time of 30:45.43, while Dos Santos Mello led the women's squad crossing the finish line with a top time of 30:37.0.
Santoro was the Panther's top runner on the season, leading the pack in all three races the men's team ran, posting a career-best 16th place finish at the 2022 CUNYAC Cross Country Championships with a time of 32:38.3.
Santoro and Dos Santos Mello also got it done in the classroom, joining a conference-best 25 BMCC student-athletes with 2022 Fall Scholar-Athlete Honor Roll accolades, while both were also named to the 2022-23 Region 15 Academic All-Region 15 Team.
Both runners also made national headlines in the classroom, receiving 2022-23 NJCAA Academic All-America Team honors. Dos Santos Mello earned First Team honors with a perfect 4.0-grade point average, while Santoro picked up Third Team honors.
