#7 Men’s Basketball Closes Out 2014 with Consecutive Wins

 The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's basketball team earned two more victories last week with wins over LaGuardia Community College (84-74) on Thursday and Bronx Community College (75-69) on Saturday. With the wins, the Panthers extend their winnig streak to seven games improve to 12-1 on the season and remain undefeated in CUNYAC community college play (5-0).

On Thursday BMCC traveled to Long Island City to face the #15 Red Hawks in a battle for first place in the CUNYAC standings. The Panthers led 34-29 at the half and maintained their lead for the remainder of regulation to earn the 84-74 victory.

Sophomore captain Joseph Ojo led all scorers with 20 points, shooting 4-7 and 10-14 from the free-throw line. The Staten Island native also grabbed seven boards and added three assists and three steals.

Freshman standouts Neil Viera and Kenneth Coar also starred, with the former notching 19 points, 15 rebounds and two blocks for his first double-double of the season and the latter scoring 17 and adding nine rebounds, two blocks and two steals.

BMCC dominated the boards, out-rebounding LaGuardia 57-26. The Panthers also outshot their opponents, 55.6% to 41.9%.

Saturday saw the team travel up to the Bronx to face the Broncos, who at 9-4 had established themselves as more than worthy adversaries. BMMC led 37-29 at the half and navigated a nervy second half to seal a 75-69 victory that placed them atop both regional and conference standings.

The backcourt, consisting of leading scorer Elijah Bryant (18 points, four rebounds, two assists) and Ojo (16 points, seven rebounds, five assists and two steals) provided most of the offense, while the front court, led by Jericho Cherisma (14 points, 17 rebounds, four blocks) and Coar (12 points, 11 rebounds) had their way in the paint.

Again, the Panthers—the fourth best rebounding team in the nation—dominated overall on the boards, holding an advantage of 57 to 36. BMCC also created more turnovers (15-9) a severely outshot the Broncos 50% to 38.5%.

BMCC is inactive through the holiday season and will return to action on Saturday, January 3 when they travel to Suffolk County Community College in Selden, NY for a 3:00 PM tip. The Lady Panthers preceded the men at 1:00 PM.
