Men’s and Women’s Basketball Sweep Season-Opening Double-Header

Both teams beat Bergen to pick up their first wins of the season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BERGEN, NJ| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's and women's basketball teams both defeated their Bergen Community College counterparts in a season-opening double-header on Tuesday evening in Bergen, NJ. The men won by the score of 97-79 and the women claimed a 73-56 victory.

In the opening match, freshman Kristen Merrell led the Lady Panthers in her first game for BMCC with a triple-double scoring 38 points and adding 13 rebounds and 10 steals. Sophomore captain Luye Murphy pitched in with 15 points, four rebounds and two steals. Guard Ana Pacheco scored eight points and added 10 rebounds as well.

Not to be outdone, the men followed the women's lead and battled through a tough first half before locking down their opponent in the second half of the second match. Freshman guard Elijah Bryant had a sparkling debut with 34 points, six rebounds and five assists. Neil Viera also had a strong debut potting 14 points and adding seven rebounds. Sophomore forward Akeem Williams notched his first double-double with a 18-point, 10-board and four-block night.

Up next for the men is Union County College, who the Panthers will host on Thursday, November 6 at 6:30 PM inside BMCC Gym. The women return to action on Thursday, November 11 when they travel to Kingsborough Community College for a 5:30 tip.
