Men Win After Frantic Second Half, Women Fall Short in QCC Doubleheader

Elijah Bryant led the men with 19 points, Alexis Hart had 11 for the women

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW YORK , NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College women's and men's basketball teams split a doubleheader with Queensborough Community College on Tuesday night in New York, NY. The women surrendered a 70-34 decision to the QCC ladies, but the men outlasted the Tigers in a highly entertaining 73-69 match.

The ladies played nearly all of the opening game without leading scorer Kristen Merrell due to injury, but Alexis Hart did her best to shoulder the load. The freshman tallied a season-best 11 points and added six rebounds, two steals and one block.

Guard Luye Murphy also battled injury in the game and played only 27 minutes, scoring eight points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists.

The Lady Panthers' greatest struggles came on the fast break, where they allowed their opponents to hold a 30-4 advantage. The Tigers also held a steep advantage in rebounds (70-38).

After surrendering the first five points of their match, the men pushed back hard and held leads as great as 21 points. The Panthers appeared to be in control after the first half up 42-25, but a 22-6 run by Queensborough in the final seven minutes of the second half brought the Tigers to within one point (68-67) with one minute left in the game. In the end, BMCC would outlast its opponent and claim a 73-69 win.

Freshman guard Elijah Bryant scored 19 points, grabbed eight boards, and collected four assists and two steals in addition to hitting a couple of clutch shots late in the second half to ensure BMCC victory.

Neil Viera and Akeem Williams contributed 10 points each, with the former collecting eight boards and the latter six. Point guard Joseph Ojo scored 11 and added 4 assists.

Forward Jericho Cherisma potted nine points and 10 rebounds, while Kenneth Coar grabbed a game-high eleven boards.

The Panthers made their presence felt in the paint, out-rebounding their opponent 57-33. BMCC also held an overall shooting advantage over QCC (33.3%-31.3%).

Both the men and women are inactive over the Thanksgiving recess, but will return to action on Tuesday, December 2 when both teams travel up to the Bronx to face Hostos Community College in a CUNYAC doubleheader. The women get things started at 6:00 PM and the men will follow at 8:00 PM.
