Men Win, Women Lose in Doubleheader with Dutchess

Luye Murphy and Kristen Merrell led all Panthers in scoring with 17 points each

Box Score NEW YORK , NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College women's and men's basketball teams split a doubleheader with Dutchess Community College Thursday night in New York, NY. The women dropped a 69-57 decision and fell to 2-3 on the season, while the men won a scrappy 56-36 contest to improve to 7-1 on the year.

The women took the floor first and struggled to find their footing offensively in the early going, although they managed to bring the game within one (21-20) in the latter stages of the first half. But the duo of the Lady Falcons' Julia Occhi (30 points, 10 rebounds) and Kianna Nicholos (24 points, seven rebounds, six steals) would go on to score 54 of Dutchess' 69 points and power  the visitors to victory.

Stars Luye Murphy and Kristen Merrell led the Panthers with a combined 34 points (17 each). Merrell also added 13 rebounds to claim the double-double.

Freshman Mildhreen Cacoque collected nine points and six assists, while forward Alexis Hart scored eight.

The men took the floor for an 8:00 PM start against their Dutchess counterparts in a low-scoring, scrappy game. Dutchess' game-plan from the outset was to slow the pace and stifle the BMCC attack. And although the Falcons were able to disrupt the Panthers' offense, BMCC still found a way to win its seventh victory of the season.

Kenneth Coar continued his strong run of form and led the Panthers in points with 14 while also grabbing eight boards. Guard Elijah Bryant scored 12 of his own and Neil Viera potted eight. Akeem Williams had game-highs in rebounds (nine) and blocks (three).

Up next for the men is Nassau Community College, who they take on in Garden City, NY on Saturday, November 22 at 1:00 PM. The women return to the court on Tuesday, November 25 for a home match against Queensborough Community College at 5:30 PM. The men will follow at 7:30 PM.
