Men’s and Women’s Basketball Downed by Sullivan in Doubleheader

Luye Murphy led all BMCC scorers on the day with 20

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW YORK, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's and women's basketball teams both lost to Sullivan Community College in a NJCAA Region XV doubleheader on Saturday inside BMCC Gym. The women lost 88-47 and fall to 2-2 on the season while the men lost an exciting match 84-78 and are now 5-1 on the year.

The women got things started on the afternoon and they were led by captain Luye Murphy who scored 20 points and grabbed four rebounds. Forward Kristen Merrell potted 17 of her own and added seven boards.

The Lady Panthers struggled to establish themselves against a strong Sullivan outfit and failed to make an impact in the paint and on the break.

The men stormed out of the gate in their game,  scoring nine of the match's first 11 points. BMCC's greatest lead came at 3:06 of the first when the side led by 12. The Panthers would carry a 44-34 lead into the second.

Sullivan proved why they're a top team in the region in the second frame when they erased the ten-point deficit and took their first lead at 8:22. Sullivan would go on to outlast the Panthers and hand them their first loss of the season.

Neil Viera and Kenneth Coar Jr. led BMCC in scoring with 17 each. Coar also grabbed 11 rebounds. Jericho Cherisma's 11 points and 11 rebounds gave him his second double-double in as many games.

Up next for the men is Rockland Community College away on Tuesday, November 18 at 7:00 PM. The women are back in action on Thursday, November 20 when Dutchess Community College comes to BMCC for Homecoming. Be sure to join us for contests and prizes.
