Men’s Basketball Improves to 5-0 with Win Over Orange, Women Lose First of the Season

Both sides are back in action on Saturday, November 15

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 NEW YORK, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's and women's basketball teams split a doubleheader with Orange County Community College Thursday night at home. The women dropped an 82-55 decision to their Orange counterparts, but the men saw off the Colts with an 88-59 win that improved their record to 5-0.

In the first match, the duo of Luye Murphy and Kristen Merrell powered the Lady Panthers, but it proved not good enough against a balanced Orange side. Murphy scored a season-high 24 points and added six rebounds and five assists. Merrell potted a game-high 28 in addition to recording five rebounds, four assists and four steals. The freshman sharpshooter is currently averaging 30 points-per-game.

The men battled through a tough opening 10 minutes in the first half before blowing the match wide open in the second half en route to their fifth straight victory of the season.

Freshman standout Elijah Bryant led the Panthers in scoring for the second time this season with 23 points. The Staten Island, NY native also grabbed eight rebounds and added six assists. Captain Joseph Ojo scored 10 points of his own in addition to racking up eight assists.

Freshman Anthony Nakhle went 4-6 from three to record 12 points for his highest total of the season. Jericho Cherisma did well to replace the injured Akeem Williams in the starting five scoring 14 points and grabbing 14 boards, seven of which came on the offensive side of the ball.

BMCC dominated the paint, outscoring its opponent 46-26 in addition to claiming more second-chance points (20-6).

Next up for both the men and the women is Sullivan Community College, who come to BMCC on Saturday, November 15. The women tip off at 12:00 PM and the men get started at 2:30 PM.
