BMCC Stunned By Suffolk C.C. 88-72; Black Posts Career-High 33 Points And Marte Becomes Third Player To Score 700 Career Points

Selden, New York - The BMCC men's basketball team was defeated on the road in Region 15 play 88-72 on Saturday afternoon at Brookhaven Gymnasium. The Panthers fell to 9-14 (9-7 Region XV), while the Sharks improved to 9-11 (9-7 Region XV) with the victory.

Freshman Khalil Black (Queens, New York) had a monstrous performance, becoming the second Panther player this season to have a 30-point game, dropping a team and career-high 33 points on a team-best 12-of-17 shooting from the field (71 percent) and a career-high six three-pointers made and 75 percent mark from downtown. Sophomore Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) joined Black with his team-leading tied 19th double-figure game with 23 points in the contest and collaborated with Black to distribute a team-best three assists each. Marte has scored 20 points a team-high seven times this season and has 11 career point games for his career.

Marte also became the third player in program history to reach 700 career points, finishing Saturday afternoon's contest with 707 career points, ranking fourth most in program history. Marte's season-best 431 points are also ranked ninth most in a single season.

Black was also the Panthers leader on the glass, grasping a team-best seven boards on the night, while Freshman Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) sent away a team-high four shots, and Marte snatched two steals, also team-high.

Marte, who broke the men's basketball program's all-time steals record last Thursday to reach 101 career steals against NJCAA Division III nationally-ranked Dutchess Community College in a 63-57 victory, now has 103 career steals for his career.

Mohammed also broke the single-season record for blocks last Thursday during the Panther's 63-57 upset victory over Dutchess Community College with 82 and added to his single-season record after Saturday with 86 blockswhich is also tied for fourth all-time in program history.

Suffolk Community College grabbed 10 of the first 13 points of the contest, leading 10-3 on a three-pointer at the 16:12 mark. BMCC responded with an 8-2 run to get the lead down to one 12-11 at 13:21 on a Black three-pointer. Suffolk went on 8-0 to lead 20-11 on a three-pointer, then the Panthers got within three, 21-18 at 8:40 on a pair of Marte free throws before the Sharks went on an 11-3 run to grab their first double-digit lead by 11, 32-21 on a three-pointer with 5:08 remaining. Suffolk's fastbreak with 1:19 stretched the lead to 16, 43-27, and then the biggest of the first half, 17, on a pair of free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining, making it 47-30 at halftime.

Suffolk continued to hold their double-digit advantage in the second despite the Panthers outscoring them 42-41 in the second half, getting their lead to 20 for the first time on the afternoon 21, 57-36 on a jumper from inside the free throw line at 14:56. Suffolk would build their lead to as large as 23 numerous times in the second half and be able to hold off a strong second half scoring surge from the Panthers to win it 88-72.

The Panthers will look to bounce back on the road this Tuesday, February 6, at 7:00 p.m. in CUNYAC action against Hostos Community College at the Swamp in the Bronx, New York. For more information, visit the BMCC Men's Basketball Schedule Page.
