New York, New York – The BMCC men's basketball program swept the CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball Weekly awards for the first time this season with two outstanding performances from freshmen Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) and Khalil Black (Queens, New York) in the Panthers two contests last week with
Mohammed capturing his first-ever Conference Player of the Week honor and Black being named Rookie of the Week for the second straight time this season. Mohammed picked up his second conference weekly honor after being named Conference Honorable Mention in November, while Black collected Rookie of the Week recognition for the third time this season.
Mohammed finished the 2023 calendar portion of the Panther's schedule with authority, posting two straight double-doubles in both of BMCC's two contests last week, averaging 16 points per game, 16.5 rebounds per game, 4.5 blocks per game, 63 percent from the field (10-for-16), 85.7 percent from the line (12-for-14) to go along with three assists and three steals against NJCAA Division II opponents
Westchester Community College and
Raritan Valley Community College. After hauling down a game-high 14 rebounds and
tying for the team lead in scoring with 13 points for his fifth double-double of the season and a game-best six blocks to go along with two assists and one steal against Westchester Community College last Tuesday. Mohammed would take it to new heights over the weekend against
defending NJCAA Division II Region 19 Champion Raritan Valley Community College, posting his second straight double-double and team-leading sixth of the year with a career and team-best 19 points, 11 of them in the second half while hauling down a career and game-high 19 boards, taking down 11 of them in the second half.
Mohammed also denied a career-best tied and game-high seven shots in the contest against the Lions to go along with two steals and an assist.
The 6'10 big man from Lagos, Nigeria, has put his opponents and the nation on notice in the paint this season, ranking in the top five in the country in four defensive categories, with his
team-best 64 blocks tied for second nationally and his
4.6 blocks per game average
standing alone at number two in the country while
his team-leading 192 rebounds and
13.7 rebounds per game average are
third and
tied for fifth in the country.
He has registered five or more blocks in back-to-back contests and eight in his 14 games this season.
Mohammed has also registered a team-best 11 double-digit rebounding games, including four straight and a team-high six double-doubles.
The Evangel Christian product is also climbing the Panther men's basketball program record books, with his
64 blocks being the
fifth most in a single season, surpassing
Justin Daniel's 63 blocks from 2009-10 and
Kenneth Coar's 60 blocks from 2014-2015 and
seventh all-time in program history. His
192 total rebounds also moved him into 21st all-time in program history, surpassing two-time CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball
Champion
Lawrence Todman's total of 188 from 2016 to 2018.
Black continued his strong finish to the 2023 portion of the Panthers schedule, posting back-to-back double-figure scoring performances, including his sixth straight to end the year and team-leading tied 10th of the season while averaging 14 points per game, 52.3 percent from the field (11-for-21) with four assists, four steals, and a block in the Panthers two contests last week.
The Queens, New York native tied for a team-high in points with 13 points last Tuesday against
Westchester Community College, leading his squad in scoring for the fifth time this season to go along with 45.4 percent shooting (5-for-11) and a team-best three-pointers. He also recorded four rebounds, two steals, an assist, and a block against the Vikings.
Black was one of four Panthers in double figures last Thursday against
2022-23 NJCAA Division II Region 19 Champion Raritan Valley Community College, posting his team-best tied 10th on the year with 15 points along with six rebounds, three assists, and two steals in the Panthers close 88-81 overtime loss to the Lions.
Black leads the Panthers in three-pointers made (24) and three-pointers attempted (60), connecting on two or more three-pointers in eight of his thirteen games this season and in his last four games. He is
second on the Panthers in total points (184), scoring average (13.1), field goals attempted (139), free throws made (37), free throws attempted (47), and steals (23) while ranking third in field goals made (61).
The Panthers are done with the 2023 portion of their 2023-24 schedule and will get back to it at home in the New Year on Saturday, January 6, at 2 p.m. against Passaic County Community College at BMCC Gymnasium. For more information, visit the
