New York, New York – After both setting new career marks last week, BMCC women's basketball freshman
Emily Kennedy (Brooklyn, New York) received CUNYAC CC Women's Basketball Rookie of the Week for the second consecutive week, and men's basketball freshman
Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) collected conference Rookie of the Week accolades for the first time of his career.
Kennedy has received Rookie of the Week recognition by the CUNYAC three times this season.
Kennedy's second half continues to be impressive as the freshman forward registered two straight double-doubles and averaged 23.5 points per game and 13.5 rebounds per game, helping Panthers get a split during their two contests last week.
The Brooklyn, New York native collected the first double-double of her career and game-best 29-point effort, with 11 in the first quarter and 12 in the fourth quarter to hold off a late Laguardia C.C. surge 49-31 to pick up their third conference victory. Kennedy also ripped down a career and game-high 14 rebounds while also recording career highs in shooting, going a career-best 9-for-25 from the field and 88.9% from the charity stripe (8-9 FT)
In the Panther's tough loss to Nassau C.C. 97-38, Kennedy recorded her second double-double of the week, dropping a team-high 18 points and missing her career-high for rebounds from Tuesday by one with 13, also team-best.
During the Panther's two contests last week,
Jarrett put up the best week of his young career at BMCC, averaging 15.5 points per game and 15.5 rebounds per game. The Bronx, New York native made it two consecutive seasons that the Panthers men's basketball program had a player hit the 20-point, and 20-rebound plateau after
Spencer Barnes achieved that feat last season with a season-high 28 points and 20 rebounds.
Jarrett exploded to open the week during a dominant win 88-45 over Laguardia Community College, registering a game and career-high 23 points and 23 rebounds while also setting new career bests in field goals made (10) and attempted (24) and assists (2). His 23 rebound effort is just four shy of BMCC's single-game record of 27 set by Jericho Cherisma against Dutchess Community College on January 21, 2017.
Jarrett recorded a game-best tied eight rebounds and turned away a game-high two shots to go along with eight points in the Panthers matchup with Nassau Community College.
Kennedy leads the Panthers in
scoring average with 17.8 points per game and is tied first in steals with 31 while also being second in points (141), rebounding average (7.9), and is tied second with 16 assists. The
Benjamin Banneker Academy product is red hot to start the back part of the BMCC schedule with three 20-point efforts in her first five contests and a 21.8 point per game average.
Jarrett is second on the Panthers
in three categories, rebounds (97), rebounding average (6.9), and blocks (12).
The BMCC men's basketball team heads on the road more a major CUNYAC battle with conference tournament seeding on the line against conference foe Queensborough Community College. The Tigers have won 11 of their last 12 contests, and the Panthers have the top record in the conference at 6-1.
The women will open the conference road doubleheader tomorrow, January 31, at 5:30 p.m., then the men will follow at 7:30 p.m. at RFK Gymnasium in Bayside, New York. For more information, visit the
