Charlotte, North Carolina – After a masterful performance in the Panther's four matches this week, BMCC women's volleyball Freshman setter Emmanuella Aurel (Port Au Prince, Haiti) received NJCAA Division III Defensive Player of the Week honors as announced on Wednesday by the NJCAA. She becomes the second player this season to receive NJCAA Player Of The Week honors after her teammate Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) received it earlier this season for Division III Offensive Player of the Week.
The Port Au Prince, Haiti native, set a new single-season record for digs with 321, surpassing Nisha Rosario's single-season mark of 309 from 2018 while also moving into second all-time in program history, passing Thelma Torre's 310 career digs from 2006 to 2007. The accolades keep coming for Aurel, who was selected to the NJCAA Region 15 All-Region Second Team earlier this week, serving as the heart and soul of the Panther's backline corralling 69 digs and 5.75 digs per set during a 3-1 week. She put up her third 30-dig effort of the season in a four-set victory over FIT and her fourth 20-dig performance in the final game of the Panthers of their conference double dual with 26 digs in a four-set victory over Kingsborough Community College.
Her efforts also led BMCC to their first undefeated season in conference play since 2008 and 14 Region 15 victories, the most in almost a decade for the Panthers.
Aurel also got it done on offense for the Panthers kicking off the week with back-to-back double-doubles and double-digit kill performances against Monroe-Bronx with 11 kills and 15 digs and against the Fashion Institute of Technology with a career-high 12 kills and 30 digs. During the Panther's final CUNYAC double dual of the season, she also tied a team-high for service aces with three in both matches.
In addition to her impact on the Panthers serve to receive transition, she also has been a force in the front row defensively, leading BMCC with 25 blocks while also being second on the team offensively in three other categories kills (125), assists (99), and service aces (53).
The Panthers are the top seed in the CUNYAC for the first time since 2008 and looking to pursue their first conference title since 2006. They will look to take it all following Monday, October 24, at the CUNYAC Championship, beginning with a semifinal match with the fourth-seeded Hostos Community College Caimans at 4 p.m. at RFK Gymnasium in Bayside, Queens.
BMCC has also locked up the second seed in Region 15, their highest ranking in several seasons, and kick off the postseason with a Region 15 quarterfinals matchup tomorrow, October 20, against Kingsborough Community College at 6 p.m. at BMCC Gymnasium.
