FLUSHING, N.Y. (Oct. 25, 2018) - The City University of New York Athletic Conference and Pepsi announced their annual community college women's volleyball All-Star honorees and major award winners on Thursday.
It was a clean sweep for Queensborough, which clawed its way to a fourth-straight CUNYAC Championship in 2018 on Monday.
Paola Beniquez repeated as the Player of the Year.
Ashly Saladin took home Rookie of the Year honors.
Jason Demas earned the Coach of the Year nod.
Player of the Year - Paola Beniquez, So, OH, Queensborough
Beniquez has picked up from where she left off last season, registering a team-leading 191 kills on a Region XV-best .355 hitting percentage. She leads all of NJCAA Division III in aces (132) and aces per set (1.97), and has posted nine double-doubles. Beniquez was also the only player in the conference to earn Athlete of the Week praise this year.
Rookie of the Year - Ashly Saladin, Fr, OPP, Queensborough
Saladin, a three-time CUNYAC Rookie of the Week selection in 2018, has made a statement in her debut campaign for the Tigers. She has totaled 135 kills this season, averaging an impressive 2.29 kills per set, on a .282 attack clip. Additionally, Saladin has racked up 152 digs and 49 service aces in 22 matches played.
Coach of the Year - Jason Demas, Queensborough
Demas continues to be the leader that drives the success of the Queensborough women's volleyball program. In 2018, Demas has guided the Tigers to a 23-1 mark, as well as the No. 1 overall seed in the NJCAA Region XV Championship. Over his first nine seasons as head coach, Demas has compiled an impressive career record of 171-55-1 (.756).
