New York, New York – The BMCC men's basketball team held the Bronx Community College Broncos to 44 points, a season-best, sending their four sophomores out on top with a dominant 64-44 in CUNYAC play on Thursday night at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers registered double-digit victories in the back-to-back season, with the win improving to 10-15 (6-4 CUNYAC), while the Broncos dropped to 3-23 (2-8 CUNYAC).

The sophomores carried the torch for the Panthers offensively on their special night, with
Marte leading all scorers with his team-leading 21st double-figure game with a game-best 19 points, 11 of them in the first half. Jarrett put up back-to-back double-doubles and his seventh of the season, hauling down a game-high 14 rebounds and scoring 15 points, 12 of them in the first half, while also dishing out a game-best three assists.
Marte registered his 36th career double-figure game, moving up to third all-time in scoring with 737 career points, passing Kenneth Coar's total of 723 career points, and his season-best 461 points are now sixth most in a single season, passing Tony Vail's total of 457 points.
Jarrett posted his 10th career double-double and 23rd career double-figure game, with his 375 career rebounds ranking fifth all-time in program history and his 46 career blocks being 10th all-time in program history.
Seven different Panther players scored on the evening, with freshman
Emmanuel Agyei (Brooklyn, New York) continuing to impact the lineup, registering a career-high eight points, and classmate
Marques Jones (Bronx, New York) doing the same with a career-best six points.
Marte and freshman Ja'Lyn Griffin (Ithaca, New York) dished out two assists apiece as BMCC registered double-digit assists for the ninth time in their last 11 games and the 21st time in their 25 contest this season.
Griffin became the 11th Panther player in program history to hand out 100 assists in a single season with his team-leading 102 assists, cracking the top 10 and passing Joseph Ojo for the tenth most dimes in a single season and 20th all-time in program history.
Freshman
Khalil Black (Queens, New York) led the Panthers with a game-high tying three steals while three other players had two or more steals, with
Griffin, Jarrett, and Marte all grabbing two. Marte added to his all-time lead in career steals with 106 while setting a new season-best with 54 steals, surpassing his total last year and moving up to seventh most in a single season.
The Panthers shot 45 percent or better for the eighth straight contest, shooting 45.1 percent on the evening (23-for-51) while also outscoring Bronx Community College in the paint 32-22.
BMCC also put together a solid defensive effort, dominating the glass as they outrebounded the Broncos 40-35 and held them to 44 points, which was a season-best for the Panthers while holding them to 15.6 percent from the field (5-for-32) in the first half.
The Panthers trailed for 41 seconds of the contest, 2-0 at 19:21, before using a 7-2 run to get the lead to five, 7-2 at 17:32 on a
Jarrett jumper. The Broncos tied it with five consecutive points at seven at 15:31 on a Daniel Armstrong three-pointer. BMCC took over from the rest of the way, exploding for a 17-3 run over the next 12:23, getting the lead to double digits for the first time at 10, 20-10 at 8:53 on a Marte layup then stretching the advantage to its largest of the first half 14, 24-10 at 5:09 on a pair of Kimmeo Dixson (Bronx, New York) free throws to outscore Bronx Community College 20-7 overall to lead 27-15 at the halfway point.
The second half was more of the same as the Panthers got their lead to 20 for the first time at the 1:21 mark 58-37 on a
Nicholai Baksh (Brooklyn, New York) layup and got it to the largest of the night, 24 twice with 50 seconds left, 62-38 and 64-40 with 31 seconds left on a
Jones right-handed dunk and put back en route to a 64-44 victory.
The Bronx Community College had two players with double-figure scoring performances, with Taijay Good leading all scorers off the bench with a team-high 13 points, while Daniel Armstrong chipped in with 11 points in the contest. Herbert Gary ripped down a team-best 12 rebounds and dished out a team-high three assists, while Armstrong led the Broncos defensively with three steals.
The Panthers will return to action as the third seed for the 2023-2024 CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball Championship on Wednesday, February 14, against second seed Queensborough Community College at 8 p.m. at Kingsborough Gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York. The two teams met in last year's 2022-23 CUNYAC Community College Men's Basketball final and split the season series.
