Garden City, New York - The No. 5 seeded BMCC men's basketball team's season came to a close on Tuesday night 70-49 to No. 4 seed Nassau Community College in the 2023 Region 15 Quarterfinals. The Lions improve to 14-13 and will move on to the Region 15 semifinals at Kingsborough Community College on Saturday afternoon, March 2, against top seed and Region XV Regular Season Champion Dutchess Community College at 4 p.m.
The Panthers recorded back-to-back double-digit winning seasons with 11 victories, equaling their total from a year ago with a return to the CUNYAC Championship game for the second consecutive season.
Sophomore Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) spearheaded the offensive effort for the Panthers, dropping his team-leading ninth 20-point game and 24th double-digit scoring effort with a team-high 21 points. Classmate
Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) chipped in with 10 points of his own while freshman
Khalil Black (Queens, New York) missed his 22nd double-figure game and his 19th in the last 20 games by one point with nine in the contest while knocking down a team-best two three-pointers.
Freshman Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) hauled down a game-high 11 rebounds and uncorked a game-high four blocks.
Marte and Jarrett also led the Panthers with three steals each.
Marte finishes his illustrious career as the program's all-time leader in steals with 112 for his career and second all-time in program history in scoring with 792 career points. Marte scored in double figures in 39 career appearances and notched the 20-point plateau 13 times during his two seasons for the Panthers. Marte also was the 19th player in school history to dish out 100 plus career assists, finishing up with 103 career dimes, tied for 20th all-time with Jeremiah Cardi (New York, New York).
Marte put together a career year, being the sixth player in program history to score 500 points in a season, with his 516 points tying for fourth most in a single season. He also led the Panthers in eight different categories to end the 2023-2024 campaign with 516 points, 19.1 points per game, 198 field goals made, 352 field goals attempted, 56.3 percent field goal percentage, 107 free throws made, 133 free throws attempted, and 60 steals which were also all new career-bests. His 60 steals were also tied for fifth most in a single season.
Jarrett finished his career Tuesday night, hitting another milestone on an outstanding Sophomore campaign, becoming the sixth player in school history to record 400 career rebounds, and concluding his time with 401 career rebounds, which is fifth all-time in program history. Jarrett also denied 46 shots for his career, which is also 10th all-time.
Mohammed had a stellar debut season, being the program's single-season record holder for blocks in a season with 109, which is third in the nation and fourth all-time in program history. Mohammed was second nationally in blocks per game with 4.7 per game and hauled down a team-best 274 rebounds, which was seventh most in a single season, ninth all-time in program history, and tied for 14th nationally.
Black ends his debut season with a team-best 59 three-pointers, the eighth most in a single season and ninth all-time in school history. He recorded two or more three-pointers in 19 of 28 games during the 2023-24 campaign.
Nassau Community College jumped right out to an 18-5 lead in the first 11:48 of the first half and never looked back, taking a 33-14 lead into halftime. The Lions would not let up in the second half, leading by as much as 23 numerous times, and cruised to a 70-49 victory.
Nassau Community College had three of their five starters score in double figures on the evening, with Jesse Taylor leading the way with a game-high 32 points. Shane Turner registered a double-double, grabbing a team-high 11 boards and contributing 17 points. Anthony Todd chipped in with 12 points while Daryl Johnson handed out a game-high eight assists, and Turner gobbled up a game-best five steals and turned away a team-high two shots.
