Panthers Cruise Past Bronx C.C. In Three Sets, Aurel Becomes Seventh Player In School History To Post 200 Career Kills

New York, New York - The BMCC Women's Volleyball team returned to their winning ways Thursday evening, sweeping Bronx Community College in straight sets 25-11, 25-16, 25-14 in Region 15 action at BMCC Gymnasium. The Panthers have won four of their last six, improving to 6-3 (4-3 Region XV), while the Broncos dropped to 1-12 (0-12 Region XV).

Freshman Jaylynn Mateo (Brooklyn, New York) posted her first career double-double, uncorking a game-high 10 kills and leading the Panthers on defense with a team-best 13 digs. Mateo hit a game-high .529 (10K-1E-17TA), while sophomore Emmanuella Aurel (Port Au Prince, Haiti) just missed her second double-double of the season by one kill with nine and posted 12 digs in the contest.

Aurel became the seventh player in school history to record 200 career kills and now has 206 for her career, surpassing Olivio Ingram for ninth all-time in program history. Aurel also led the Panthers from the service line with a game-high seven service aces, including four in the first set, while freshman Kavana Liburd (Queens, New York) dished out a game-best 20 assists.

BMCC posted 18 service aces in the match and had six players with two or more. Freshmen Christvy Taha (Brooklyn, New York), Ishinay Lennon (Bronx, New York), Devon Vazquez (New York, New York), Mateo, and Liburd all had two aces on the night. One of Taha's two aces on the night was the game-winning point to give the Panthers the three-set victory.

Freshmen Andrea Perez-Guzman (Brooklyn, New York), Zoe Gomez (Brooklyn, New York), and Taha joined Aurel with one solo block each in the contest.

The Panthers got right to work, scoring five of the first six points of the opening set with three kills combined (two from Mateo and one from Gomez), giving the Panthers a 5-1 lead before the Broncos recorded three straight points to get within one, 5-4. BMCC pulled away after using a 6-0 run, with four of the six points coming on Aurel's service aces to move the advantage to seven, 11-4, and rolled after to a 25-11 first-set win.

BMCC kept their pedal to the medal in the second set, racing out to a 15-5 lead on a service ace from Mateo. Bronx Community College kept it interesting, getting within six, 22-16, before the Panthers grabbed the last three points to go up two games to none, 25-16.

Both teams traded the first eight points of the third set before the Panthers scored four consecutive points to lead 8-4, capped off by an Aurel kill. The Broncos got within two, 10-8, after a Vazquez attack error, but the Panthers would pull away after with a 12-3 run to increase their lead to 11, 22-11, the largest of the set, and take the match with a 25-14 victory.

Pamela Sierra led the Bronx Community College offense on the night with a team-high six kills, while Yamelis Santana had a team-best two service aces. Valerie De Los Santos led the Bronx defense on the night with a game-high 18 digs.

The Panthers will look to keep up this momentum in their first home Region 15 double dual of the season on Saturday, October 5, against Dutchess Community College and Orange County Community College at BMCC Gymnasium at noon and 2 p.m. For more information, visit the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
