New York, New York - The BMCC men's basketball team bounced back Tuesday night from a tough loss over the weekend with a banner shooting performance and stifled Queensborough Community College shooters the entire second half, rolling to a 79-52 victory in CUNYAC action. The victory keeps the Panthers in the third spot in the CUNYAC as they improve to 8-13 (5-3 CUNYAC), while the Tigers remain ahead of them in second, with the loss dropping them to 7-12 (7-3 CUNYAC).
The Panthers registered four new season highs on the night, posting 65.1 percent shooting from the field (28-of-43), including a 69.6 percent mark in the second half (16-of-23) and 72.7 percent from three-point range (8-of-11), with their eight three-pointers made tying another season-best. BMCC administered their suffocating defense on the Queensborough Community College offense, holding to 25 percent shooting from the field (8-of-32) in the second half.
Four of the Panther's five starters scored in double figures on the evening, marking the fourth time in the last five games that BMCC has had three or more players record double-digit scoring efforts. Sophomore
Ysaia Marte (Bronx, New York) led the way on the night for BMCC with a team-high 19 points and his team-leading 17th double-figure game.
Marte's effort moved him into fourth all-time in school history with 672 career points, surpassing Viktor Kovacevic's total of 662 career points, and he stands just one steal away from tying for the all-time program record of 100 career steals with Ariel Joseph.
Classmate Jayden Jarrett (Bronx, New York) scored 17 points and tied with fellow underclassmen
Khalil Black (Queens, New York), Kimmeo Dixson (Bronx, New York), and
Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria) with a game-high tying three assists each while missing back-to-back double-doubles by two rebounds with eight on the night.
Freshmen
Ja'Lyn Griffin (Ithaca, New York) and
Black chipped in with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Black scored in double figures for the 13th straight time this season and put up his team-best tied 17th double-figure game this year while tying with Griffin with two three-pointers made on the night and grabbing eight boards of his own. Black moved into the top 20, tying for 19th all-time in career three-pointers made with a team-leading 42 treys on the season.
Mohammed returned to the hardwood with authority, leading the Panthers on the glass with his team-leading 13 double-digit rebounding game with a team-best 10 boards on the night and game-high six blocks, while Griffin grasped a team-high four steals. Jarrett also registered three blocks in the game.
Mohammed's team-leading 76 blocks moved him into fourth most in a single season and sixth all-time in program history, surpassing Dakari Mayo's 75 career blocks. Jarrett is fifth all-time in school history with 347 career rebounds, with his 185 rebounds this season setting a new single-season best, while his 42 career blocks are 11th all-time in school history.
The Panthers also uncorked a season-high 10 blocks on Tuesday evening while spreading the wealth again on the hardwood, distributing double-digit assists for a seventh consecutive game and 19th time this season with 17 dimes. BMCC also outrebounded Queensborough Community College 45-26 and snatched 10 steals for their eighth double-digit steal effort.
Queensborough Community College got going quickly in the first half, scoring 10 of the first 14 points to lead by six, their largest lead of the game, 10-4 at 17:12 on a jumper from Bryan Godette. BMCC responded with a 12-4 run to knot it up at 14 at the 14:36 mark and go ahead for the first time by two, 16-14 at 13:59, on a pair of free throws and a jumper from
Marte.
The Tigers scored 12 of the following 18 points over the next four minutes, going back in front by one, 19-18 at 13:06 on an Isaiah Grant three-pointer and extending it to four, 26-22 at 10:14 on another Grant trey. The Panthers took control of the contest, utilizing a 13-3 run to finish the first half strong and build a 35-29 halftime lead.
BMCC frustrated the Queensborough Community College offense in the second half and pulled away, starting with an 11-1 run to lead by 16, 46-30 at 16:25 on a
Jarrett layup, then building the advantage to 20 for the first time on the night, 58-38 at the 10:00 minute mark on a Jarrett jumper. The Panthers increased their margin to its largest of the evening, 31 twice, 77-46 at 2:32 on a Boubacar Mbaye (Staten Island, New York) layup and 79-48 with 31 seconds remaining on a
Marques Jones jumper en route to a 79-52 victory.
Isaiah Grant led all Queesnborough scorers with 16 points and buried a game-high four three-pointers.
