BMCC Cross Country Program Delivers Career-Best Performance At Region 15 Championship; Reimer and Chikanyairo Earn Medals, Men Finish Third Overall Among Region Competitors

Bethpage, New York – The BMCC Cross Country Program put together a program-defining performance on a sloppy Saturday afternoon at the 2023 Region 15 Championships at the St. Joseph's Cross Country Invitational as freshman Lea Reimer and sophomore Tatenda Chikanyairo (Fort Lee, New Jersey) picked up medals as Reimer finished second overall, and Chikanyairo clocked in sixth overall among Division III JUCO competition in Bethpage, New York. The Region medals are the first for both runners and handed out to competitors for placing in the top seven in the 8k and 5k.
 
Chikanyairo spearheaded the Panther's men's program with a career-best time of 31:55.7, leading BMCC to a third-place finish among Region 15 Division III opponents with 56 points. Reimer continued to build on an outstanding debut season, finishing in the top 50 among NCAA and Two-Year runners, crossing the finish line with a new women's school record in the 5K with a time of 22:41. Her time was just seven seconds behind the top Region 15 competitor Brenin Mahon who posted a time of 22:34.
 
Freshman Amil Bermejo (Brooklyn, New York) and sophomore Trent Santoro also brought it for the Panthers, finishing seventh and eighth overall amongst Division III men's two-year cross-country squads, with Bermejo clocking in with a time of 32:12 and Santoro with a time of 33:06. Sophomore Michael Sing (Brooklyn, New York) and freshman Weerlens Valmont rounded out the five for the Men with times of 38:42 and 41:36.
 
Women's runners Kylah Hetmeyer and Breanna Johnson finished it up for the Panthers with times of 26:43 and 39:54.

The Panthers will look to build their momentum next Sunday, October 22, at the Medgar Evers College Legacy Invitational.
