New York, New York – Borough of Manhattan Community College's Esports program proved they were for real in their inaugural spring season. The BMCC Esports season came to a close as both Call of Duty units (Warzone and Cold War) were defeated in the quarterfinals and semifinals last week.
The Panthers had success at an impressive rate, with five squads (Rocket League, Call of Duty Warzone, and Cold War, and two individuals - Smash Brothers and NBA 2K21) qualifying for the playoffs and one of them advancing to the semifinals.
The Panther's Call of Duty Cold War Aisha Ellis (Queens, NY), Christian Vasquez (Brooklyn, NY), Jarrett Thomas (Brooklyn, NY), Jose Brazoban (Bronx, NY), Justin Jacobs (Queens, NY), Pablo Romero (Queens, NY), and Raheem Redway (Yonkers, NY) was in a class of their own during the 2021 spring season finishing as Regular Season Champions and clinching the top seed for the playoffs. BMCC also finished the regular season sweeping all their opponents en route to a 9-0 record
Rocket League Dakarie Downie (Brooklyn, NY), Kevin Martinez (Brooklyn, NY), and Jonathan Colvin (New York, NY) made BMCC Esports history, competing in a nationally broadcasted matchup against juggernaut Lackawana College and carried that momentum from that matchup into the playoffs as the #14 seed. The Panther's aggression on the field was shown throughout their first-round matchup against third-seeded Hudson Valley C.C. despite falling 4-0.
Call of Duty Warzone showed out, finishing with an 8-1 record with their only regular-season loss to NJCAAE finalist Northeastern Technical College. Ivan Minaya (New York, NY) went punch for punch during a 4-2 decision with one of the best players in the playoffs, Iquez C. of Hinds Community College, and Caleb Miller (Brooklyn, NY) gave a strong effort in a first-round loss to Carl Albert State College.
