New York, New York – The Panthers got out of the gate fast in week one of the inaugural season for Borough of Manhattan Community College Esports! BMCC had a strong showing in their opening week of play and let their competition know they are here to stay as a serious contender.
The Panther's Super Smash Brothers Ultimate (One-on-One) squad led the week off in NJCAA action. BMCC's
Abel Perez (Bronx, NY) defeated Westchester Community College's Mark Bosmediano, 4-1 and
Jonathan Wegter (Brooklyn, NY) won over the Vikings.
Perez credits his opening week victory to the excellent preparation that online players gave him before his match and knows there is room to improve.
"I trained as hard as I can on Monday with some new players I met online. They really helped me to improve my Joker play and gave me advice with the character, while also help me get rid of my habits a bit as well (which was playing aggressive, panicking during mid-match, and doing miss stick inputs)," said Perez. "My main goal is to improve my Joker play and my general play. Joker is my secondary main, but I haven't used the character much."
Competing in their first NJCAA league matchup, the BMCC Panthers Rocket League team (
Dakarie Downie (Brooklyn, NY), Gamalier Rodriguez (New York, NY), Jonathan Colvin (New York, NY), Kevin Martinez (Brooklyn, NY)) cruised to a 4-0 victory over Southwest Wisconsin Technical College last Thursday.
Downie, the team's captain, was glad the team opened with a victory in Week One but need to get back to work and tighten things up with tougher competition ahead.
"There were some sloppy plays that our opponents could have countered but didn't, so we need to practice more because it will not get any easier when we face better teams," said Downie. The team will be back at it on Thursday, February 19th at 5 p.m. against Monroe Community College.
The NBA 2K1 returns to action on February 18th at 6 p.m. as
Miller will square off against John Wood Community College, and
Jarrett Thomas (Brooklyn, NY) will open his season against Southwestern Oregon Community College.
The BMCC Panthers Valorant team (
Abel Sanchez (Bronx, NY), Christian Vasquez (Brooklyn, NY), Imran Muhammad (Bronx, NY), Julio Lozano (Bronx, NY), Justin Too (New York, NY), Ryan Castro (Bronx, NY), Umair Irshad (Brooklyn, NY)) finished the week in dominating fashion, rolling 13-1 over Nassau Community College Team 2 on Friday evening. They will look to keep that momentum going the following Friday, February 19th, at 5 p.m. against the University of South Carolina Sumter.
