Volleyball Splits Homeopening Tri-Match On Saturday

New York, New York | The BMCC women's volleyball team swept its tri-match opener against CUNYAC opponent Bronx Community College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-12, and 25-11) before falling to FIT in straight sets, 25-16, 25-12, 25-21 on Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. With the split, the Panthers record moves to 1-1 (1-1 Region XV) while the Broncos fall to 0-2 (0-1 Region XV) and Tigers improve to 2-0 (1-0 Region XV).

Sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all hitters with five kills in the match. Fernandez also posted a team-best 16 digs and five service aces. Classmates Liverpool Andecia (Georgetown, Guyana) and Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) threw down four and three kills respectively. Freshman Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) dished out a team-best 17 assists to go along with six digs. Teammate Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) recorded five digs in the match.

Bronx Community College was held to a -.415 hitting percentage, as freshman Nayely Rodriguez led all swingers with two kills. Rodriguez also handed out a team-high three assists while sophomore Alondra Mesa had a team-best nine digs. Sophomore Florannni Tejada added three service aces in the match.
 
In the second match against a FIT, sophomore Nolverys Fernandez (Santiago, Dominican Republic) led all players with six kills. Fernandez also led the Panthers with 20 digs. Kaylin Nieves (New York, New York) posted the first double-double of her BMCC career with a team-high 16 assists and ten digs. Classmates Danielle Singson (Jersey City, New Jersey) and Alyssa Duran (Jarabacoa, Dominican Republic) also recorded double-digit digs with 17 and 12 respectively.

For FIT, freshman Carly Gallagher led all players in the match eight kills on a .389 hitting percentage. Sophomores Stephanie Berdon and Jenna Butler both recorded double-doubles as Berdon dished out a game-high 46 assists to go along with ten digs and Butler had 21 digs and ten assists. 
 
The Panthers return to action in two weeks when they travel to Queensborough Community College on Tuesday night, September 17th. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Queensborough Gymnasium.
