Men’s Soccer Storms Out of Gate, Defeats Queensborough 4-3

Jonathan Lopez’s double fired the Panthers to victory over the 2013 CUNYAC CC champs

Box Score BAYSIDE, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's soccer team started its 2014 campaign with an emphatic 4-3 victory over defending CUNYAC Community College champions Queensborough Community College in Bayside, Queens Saturday afternoon.
After controlling most of the play early on, the Panthers fell behind in the 31st minute, but just four minutes later, freshman forward Jonathan Lopez scored his first career goal. The sequence saw Lopez with his back toward goal before spinning and firing the crucial goal past the keeper.
Just two minutes later Queensborough took the lead for the second time, but sophomore midfielder Abdul Muftau's 40th minute strike from right in front of goal ensured the sides would head into halftime tied at two.

A tightly contested second half in midfield yielded few early opportunities for either team until Queensborough scored to take the lead for a third time courtesy of an indirect free-kick inside the box in the 67th minute.
Yet the Panthers would claw back for a third time in the 77th minute, when Lopez netted his second of the match with a cool, low finish from the edge of the box.

And just a minute later BMCC found a winner. Freshman midfielder Angelo Chavez pounced on a loose ball in front of goal after a lengthy free kick attempt by sophomore midfielder Driton Selimanjin found the head of freshman midfielder Ryo Koiso in the box. Koiso directed the ball toward Chavez who swiftly slotted the ball past the keeper for his first career goal.

BMCC freshman keeper Melvin Lopez stopped four shots in his collegiate debut, while the panthers as a whole directed 14 shots toward the Queensborough net.

In addition to the BMCC attack making the most of their net-front opportunities, Selimanjin and Koiso did an excellent job shoring up the midfield in an attempt to stifle the QCC attack.

Next up are the Panthers' regional rivals Suffolk Community College, who they're slated to play on Wednesday, September 10 at 4 PM in Selden, NY.
