Men’s Soccer Dismisses Hostos in Home Opener

William Grajales scored three goals in the 8-0 victory

Box Score NEW YORK, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's soccer team won its home opener on Wednesday evening 8-0 against CUNYAC rivals Hostos Community College at Pier 40. With the victory, the Panthers improve to 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in CUNYAC play.

BMCC pressured the Caimans early and finally broke through in the 27th minute, when a Abdul Muftau shot from outside the box was banged in by midfielder William Grajales. Just a minute later, Muftau slotted a ball to a streaking Kimani Evans, who slid the ball around the keeper and into the back of the net for the freshman midfielder's first career collegiate goal.

In the 36th minute, freshman Angelo Chavez intercepted a ball in the final third and bent it around the Hostos keeper for his second goal of the season. Sophomore midfielder Driton Selimanjin wrapped up the second-half scoring in the 37th minute, just six minutes after being introduced, when he pounded home a free kick from the edge of the box.

Last season's leading scorer Itamar Pereira made his season debut in the second half after missing the Panthers' first two games of the season with injury. The forward wasted little time opening his 2014 goal-scoring account, when he scored a 62nd-minute goal that saw him cut in from the left side and cooly finish a left-footed attempt after defender Murtula Huruna played the sophomore a sublime ball up the right side.

Freshman midfielder Christian Pacode netted his first BMCC goal in the 67th minute before William Grajales scored the game's last two goals to complete his first career hatrick. The first came by way of a header off a corner and the second was scored via a penalty.

In goal, Randy Zacarias got the start, but was untested. Daniel Buritica played the second half and made one save.

BMCC fired an astounding 27 shots toward goal, with 12 of them either beating or testing the visiting keeper. Hostos managed three attempts at goal.

Next up for the Panthers is Kingsborough Community College. The two are set to kickoff on Saturday, September 20 at 2 PM at Kingsborough.
