Men’s Soccer Earns Crucial Draw at Nassau

BMCC’s 5-1-1 record ties them for second in the region

Box Score GARDEN CITY, NY| The Borough of Manhattan Community College men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Nassau Community College Wednesday night in a Region XV showdown that took place at Mitchell Field in Garden City, NY. The Panthers' now boast a 5-1-1 record in regional play, which places them in a second-place tie.

The first half was a feeling out process for both sides, as not many chances were generated at either end. BMCC produced four shots, with only one challenging the NCC keeper. Panthers' keeper Melvin Lopez made one save in the half.

Nassau poured it on in the second, generating 14 attempts at goal—four of which forced Lopez into a save. BMCC midfielder William Grajales had an opportunity to win the game in the closing stages, but saw his attempt from the right post dribble past the left post. Lopez made a game-saving save in the 87th minute, when he blocked a point blank opportunity off the foot of Nassau's Reece Dalton.

The introduction of John Castellanos in overtime energized the Panthers, despite the fact that his side was playing a man down. The forward had a chance to win it late in the first overtime, when Itamar Pereira found him on the break down the right side, but Castellanos' attempt struck the outside of the net.

In all, Lopez made a eight saves—some of which were brilliant. The keeper was the game changer on the day, although BMCC's midfield trio of Diego Soto, Driton Selimanjin and Ryo Koiso put in a fine effort to interrupt Nassau in the middle of the pitch.

The Panthers will host Bronx Community College on Saturday, October 4 at Pier 40 at 5:45 PM. With a win, BMCC would be crowned CUNYAC CC Regular Season Champions and lock up a berth in the CUNYAC CC Championship match.
