Men's Soccer Year In Review

New York, N.Y. - The BMCC Men's Soccer team wrapped up the 2013 season last Saturday against # 3 Suffolk Community College, in the Region XV playoffs. The Sharks beat the Panthers 1-0 in a 2OT thriller.

The Panthers were led by GK Irvin Baretto who made 19 saves. Prior to the game Baretto was named 2nd Team All-Region for his outstanding play in the 2013 season. The Panthers had opportunities in both the 1st and 2nd half to score a goal but were unsuccessful in their 14 shot attempts.

The Panthers finished the season 5-7-1, third place in CUNY and ninth place in Region XV after finishing 12-2-1 a year ago winning the CUNY Championship and losing in the Region XV Championship game.

"Overall I would say that this was a disappointing season. Our goal was to win a CUNY Championship and a regional final and we didn't reach it," said first-year coach Modou Seck. "The performance can be explained by the fact we lacked experience with this group. We had a very young team with only two returning players and I am very confident that next season will be different," said Seck. "Our players got an idea of what's expected from them and we are looking forward to having a strong spring season."

The Panthers had three players recognized with post-season awards for their play this season.

F Ilir Papraniku - He was also named a CUNY All-Star and made 3rd Team All-Region.

F Itamar Pereira - He was also named a CUNY All-Star.

GK Irvin Baretto - Along with being named to the 2nd Team All-Region, he was named a CUNY All-Star. "Irvin's performance this season was excellent and I'm sure we will see him starting for a D-1 or D-2 team next season," said coach Seck.

"Despite not being recognized with awards, Nicholas Sierna and Alkid Lala have to be praised because they made up one of the best center-back pairs in the region," said Seck. "Fausto Perez was a great leader on and off the pitch and he will be missed next season." The Panthers look to rebound and build up a contending team this upcoming spring season.
