Bronx, New York - The BMCC Baseball team lost in CUNYAC action 14-4 to Bronx Community College on Monday afternoon at Ohio Field. The loss drops the Panthers to 2-16 (2-10 CUNYAC), while the win improved the Broncos to 8-15 (6-6 CUNYAC).
Sophomore Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) led the Panthers' offense with his second multi-hit game of the year, including a game-best tied two hits, including his second double of the year and sixth of his career. Rodriguez-Reyes is now tied for sixth all-time in career doubles with six while also scoring a team-high three runs in the contest.
Classmate Peter Marino (New York, New York) and freshmen Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.), and Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) all recorded hits in the game. De Jesus Lebron extended his hitting streak to a season-high five games, while Casana and Marino extended theirs to four games. All three also drove in a run.
Marino stole a game-high tied three bases while Rodriguez-Reyes had two and Casana had one.
Freshman Jariel Irizarry (New York, NY) led the Panthers on defense with a career and game-best tied nine putouts and threw out a runner.
Oscar Rosas picked up the victory for the Broncos, going four innings and allowing three runs, all earned on five hits while striking out three and walking three.
Marino took the loss, going 5.1 innings and allowing six runs (two earned) on two hits with five strikeouts and four walks. The New York, New York native ranks third all-time in career strikeouts with 45, and his team-leading 28 strikeouts are now sixth most in a single season, passing Brandon Torres. Sophomores Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) and Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) pitched three innings of relief. Roldan pitched an inning and allowed five runs (two earned) on three hits, and Suarez went 2.1 innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on two hits with three walks and two strikeouts.
BMCC jumped out to an early 2-0 lead, picking up runs in the bottom of the first and second. Marino retired the first three batters he faced in the top of the first, striking out two of three, then retired three of the four batters he faced in the top of the second to keep the Broncos off the board. Marino drew a lead-off walk in the bottom of the first, then, with one out, Casana ripped an RBI single to the left field to put the Panthers in front 1-0. BMCC added to their lead in the bottom of the second as Rodriguez-Reyes ripped a one out double to get aboard and was brought across on a DeJesus Lebron RBI single to make it a 2-0 game.
The Broncos took a 4-2 lead with one run in the top of the third and three runs in the top of the fourth. Moises Ortega scored on an error to get the Bronx Community College on the board and cut the lead to one, 2-1, before Justin Martinez and Cristhian Gonzales scored when Ortega reached on an error to give the Broncos their first lead, 3-2. Ortega would steal home to increase the margin to 4-2 going into the bottom of the fourth. BMCC cut the lead to one, 4-3, on a Marino RBI single to center field.
After a scoreless fifth inning, the Broncos would increase their lead to 6-4 in the top of the sixth when Raul Chevalier scored via a walk, and Ortega came across home plate on a wild pitch. The Panthers would cut the deficit to two, 6-4, on a balk by Wilber Batista, scoring Rodriguez-Reyes. The Broncos put it away with five runs in the top of the seventh, and an RBI single from Gonzales and Rodriguez made it 8-4. Ortega and Rodriguez scored when Frailin Jimenez reached on an error to make it 10-4. The Broncos added three more runs in the top of the ninth to close it out with a 14-4 victory.
