Bellerose, New York - The BMCC baseball team had three leads on the road Monday afternoon, including a 10-8 advantage in the top of the 10th, but couldn't put Queensborough Community College away as the Tigers countered with three runs in the bottom of the inning with Jordys Roque walking in for the game-winning run to upend the Panthers 11-10 in CUNYAC play. The loss drops the Panthers to 1-5 (1-3 CUNYAC), while the Tigers improve to 4-4 (3-1 CUNYAC) with the win.
The Panthers put together their best offensive performance of the year, smacking a season-best 15 hits and stealing 12 bases in the contest. Four players registered multi-hit games, and freshmen
Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY) and
Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) became the first two players in school history to
record two home runs in a single game for the first time since April 24, 2019, against Queensborough Community College. The Panthers overall had eight players record a hit on the afternoon, spearheaded by three-hit performances from sophomores Peter Marino (New York, New York) and Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) and
Flores. Flores registered career and season-highs with three hits, while Roldan's three hits tied a career-best.
Flores blasted his team-leading second home run of the season with a solo shot in the top of the tenth and posted a career and single-game best with three RBIs, joining six players on the day to record at least one RBI.
Casana posted his first multi-hit game of the season including his first homer of the season in the top of the third. Classmates Christian Sidriyen (Higuey, D.R.), Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Rene Perez (Brooklyn, NY), and sophomore Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) all had a hit on the day.
Marino, Rodriguez-Reyes, Flores, and Perez all had multi-steal games on the afternoon. Rodriguez-Reyes posted his team-best second multi-steal game with a career-best three steals, while Marino joined him with a career-high three steals on the afternoon, and Flores and Perez each had two, which were also career highs. Marino, Flores, and Roldan all scored a team-best two runs in the contest.
Freshman
Michael Marra (Staten Island, NY) recorded a career and season-high 16 putouts while also stealing a base in the game.
BMCC also posted another season-high on the mound with 14 strikeouts as starter
Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) fanned a career-high six batters in 3.2 innings of work while allowing six hits, six runs (none earned), and three walks. Perez struck out a career-high seven batters in 4.1 innings of work, allowing eight walks and two runs (one earned) on four hits. Rodriguez-Reyes pitched one scoreless inning, allowing two walks and recording a strikeout. Freshman Jariel Irizarry (New York, NY) took the loss for the Panthers, allowing three runs (all earned) and three walks, along with a hit.
The Panthers jumped out to a 4-0 lead after three innings grabbing three runs in the top of the first inning and one in the top of the third.
Roldan ripped an RBI double on the second pitch he saw after Marino led off with a single to make it 1-0 BMCC. Flores connected for an RBI single with two outs to left field, scoring Roldan and stretching the lead to 2-0. Casana singled to left field, and a pitch hit Suarez, then Rodriguez-Reyes singled to center to score Flores and make it 3-0 Panthers going into the bottom of the first. Casana unloaded a two-out solo shot to center field to extend the Panther lead to 4-0 going into the bottom of the third, which Suarez was able to keep scoreless on the mound going into the top of the fourth.
Queensborough exploded for seven straight runs to take a 7-4 lead after five innings, ringing up six runs in the bottom of the fourth and one in the bottom of the fifth. Randy Sepulveda and Lucas Torrech got aboard with a single and a walk and crossed home plate to cut the deficit to 4-2 when Timothy Kiley reached on an error. Noah Tannenbaum and Roque uncorked an RBI single and double to knot it up at four. Brandon Caraballo waited three pitches before nailing an RBI single to center field to give the Tigers their first lead on the afternoon, 5-4, and Billy Tavarez increased the margin to 6-4 with an RBI double. After the Panthers couldn't do anything with the bases loaded in the top of the fifth, the Tigers stretched the lead to three, 7-4, on a Kiley RBI single going into the top of the sixth.
The Panthers responded with the following three runs to tie it up at seven with two runs in the top of the sixth and one in the top of the seventh.
Perez got aboard with a one-out single before Marino belted an RBI single to cut the deficit to two, 7-5. Marino stole third, then scored on an error by the Torrech to get the Panthers within one, 7-6 going into the bottom of the sixth. DeJesus Lebron connected for an RBI single with two outs to tie it again at seven going into the bottom of the inning. Perez kept it gridlocked at seven going into the top of the eighth, striking out three of the five batters he faced in the inning.
Both teams got one run in the eighth, with
Marra scoring when Flores reached on an error by Roque at third base. Torrech walked in the tying run in the bottom of the eighth to tie it at eight before Perez won a six-pitch duel at the plate with Kiley striking him out to end the inning.
After both teams failed to score in the ninth, the contest would head to extra innings. The Panthers went in front 10-8 in the top of the tenth as
Roldan led off with his second double of the contest before Flores uncorked a two-run homer with two outs. Casana couldn't keep it going, flying out to shortstop as the Panthers were just three outs away from the victory. Wyatt Rodriguez got aboard in the bottom of the tenth after being hit by a pitch, then James Cummins cashed in on an RBI double to get the Tigers within one, 10-9. Isaiah Espinal got aboard as a pitch hitter when an Irizarry pitch hit him, then Miguel Baez tied the game at 10, grounding out to shortstop in a pinch-hit appearance. After back-to-back intentional walks, Roque scored the game-winning run with a full count to give the Tigers an 11-10 win.
