BMCC Baseball Drops Season Opener To Monroe-Bronx At Home

Bellerose, New York – The BMCC Baseball team fell 17-1 in their season opener to Monroe-Bronx in Region 15 action on opening day at Padavan-Preller Complex on Tuesday afternoon. The Panthers drop to 0-1 (0-1 Region XV) with the loss, while the Express's second straight win improves them to 2-10 (1-0 Region XV).

Sophomore Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) had the Panthers' only hit on the day, with his third career triple in the bottom of the sixth, breaking up Express pitcher Adrian Quezada's no-hitter effort. Freshman Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY) registered a steal in the contest.

Freshman Rene Perez (Brooklyn, NY) was strong in his first-ever collegiate start, going three and two-thirds innings, striking out six, and walking six while allowing four runs on four hits on 96 pitches. Classmate Michael Marra (Staten Island, NY) led all Panthers with a team-best nine putouts on the afternoon. Suarez also tied a career-best with three strikeouts on 84 pitches.

Perez was able to get out of a top-of-the-first jam after walking two of the first three batters he faced. After Bryant Quezada and Gregory Espinal drew walks and recorded steals to get on second and third with one out, Perez got Jayden Mora to strike out looking and Giovanny Flores to fly out to right field, keeping the game scoreless going into the bottom of the inning.

Adrian Quezada retired three of the four batters he faced in the bottom of the first to keep it 0-0 going into the top of the second. JeanPaul Alicia Albertorio got right to work in the top of the inning for the Express drawing a leadoff walk and stealing second. Camilo Rodriguez singled right after, then advanced to second, and Albertorio scored the opening run on a Balk to make it 1-0. Quezada lined into a fielders choice double play to Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) who helped keep it a one-run game going into the bottom of the second.

After the Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the inning Perez retired the Express in order in the top of the third before the Panthers went down in order in the bottom of the inning.

Monroe-Bronx broke the game open in the top of the fourth, scoring three runs on three hits. Yan Ortiz Torres and Quezada registered back-to-back bunt singles, and Alfredo Jimenez Jr. brought Torres across the plate with an RBI single before joining Quezada. Both scored on wild pitches to make it 4-0 going into the bottom of the fourth.

Quesada struck out two of the three batters he faced and got help when Hecxiel Perez threw out Marra trying to steal to keep the Panthers off the board going into the top of the fifth. Monroe-Bronx pulled away with five runs on three hits in the fifth to make it 9-0. Espinal had a two-run single, and two errors scored two runs.

The Panthers finally got on the board at the bottom of the fifth when Flores scored on an error by Perez to make it 9-1 but couldn't do anything more on offense. The Express continued to add more in the top of the sixth, scoring eight runs on six hits, with Espinal recording a two-run single, Giovanni Flores recording a sacrifice fly RBI, Camilo Rodriguez posting a two-run triple, and Albertorio and Quesada both picking up RBI singles making it 17-1 which remained the final score for the Express victory.
