BMCC Baseball Falls To Queensborough Community College In CUNYAC Opener

Bellerose, New York – The BMCC Baseball team dropped their CUNYAC opener 26-7 in seven innings to Queensborough Community College on Tuesday afternoon at Padavan-Preller Complex. The loss drops the Panthers to 0-3 (0-1 CUNYAC), while the Tiger's second straight win improved their record to 2-3 (1-0 CUNYAC). 

The Panthers put together their best offensive performance on the season, registering a season-high 10 hits with three players posting multi-hit games led by freshman Christian Sidriyen (Higuey, D.R.), who carried the offensive torch with a game-high tying three hits, including a two-run Home Run and a double to go along with a team-best two RBIs. Classmate Michael Marra (Staten Island, NY) and sophomore Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) both recorded two hits each, with Marra posting his first double and RBI of the season.

The Panthers also ran wild on the base path, posting a season-best six steals and having their second contest with five or more. Sidriyen grabbed a game-best tied two steals, while sophomores Peter Marino (New York, New York) and Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) and freshmen Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) each had one. Sidriyen also scored three runs, leading BMCC, while Roldan scored two.
 
Freshman Jariel Irizarry (New York, NY) had another strong appearance out of the bullpen for the second time this year, going three and two-thirds innings with four strikeouts while allowing eight runs (six earned) on five hits to go along with four walks on a season-high 79 pitches. Classmate Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY) pitched two innings in relief for starter Rene Perez (Brooklyn, NY), who took the loss in the afternoon. Flores went two innings, allowing 11 runs (10 earned) on five hits with six walks and two strikeouts, while Perez only went a one-third of an inning, allowing seven runs (six earned) on one hit with four walks.
 
The Panthers bats got right to work in the top of the first inning as Roldan connected for a one-out single to left field before being brought across on Sidriyen's two-run shot to right field to give the Panthers an early 2-0 lead. Suarez kept the inning alive with a single on a line drive to center field before Casana went down swinging on four pitches to end the top of the inning. 
 
Queensborough Community College exploded for an 11-run first inning and batted around the order. After allowing back-to-back walks to Noah Tannenbaum and Wyatt Rodriguez, Brandon Caraballo brought across the Tiger's first run to cut the lead to 2-1 when he grounded out to De Jesus Lebron. Billy Tavarez battled for a five-pitch at-bat and was rewarded after ripping an RBI single on a hard ground ball to center field, scoring Rodriguez for the tying run, making it two all. 
 
The Tigers would get two more aboard in the bottom of the first when Leonel Hernandez walked, and James Cummins was hit by a pitch. 
 
Jordys Roque reached on an error by Perez, scoring Tavarez and Hernandez to give Queensborough their first lead of 4-2. The Tigers would add three more runs as Lucas Torrech connected on an RBI single to center field to make it 5-2, Tannenbaum scored on a walk, and Rodriguez was hit by a pitch to make it 7-2. After Carabello was hit by a pitch to make it 8-2, Tavarez recorded his second RBI of the inning with a single to center, scoring Tannenbaum to make it 9-2. Hernandez put up an RBI sacrifice fly, and Roque reached on an error to make the score 11-2 after one.
 
After the Panthers went down in order in the top of the second, Queensborough added three more runs to stretch their lead to 14-2 on a Carabello RBI sacrifice fly and Hernandez's two-run single. 
 
BMCC recorded three runs in the top of the third to cut the deficit to 14-5. Roldan put up another one-out single to get aboard before Marra's RBI double brought him home. Suarez got an RBI sacrifice to the pitcher, and Sidriyen scored when Casana stole second. Sophomore Julio Liz (Bronx, NY) struck out to end the top of the third. The Tigers posted six runs in the third inning to get their run total to 20 with a 20-5 with Rodriguez and Carabello coming home after being hit by a pitch, a Tavarez two-run single, and Cummins and Armando Desena scoring on a walk and being hit by a pitch.
 
BMCC recorded a run apiece in the top of the fourth and fifth innings, while Queensborough Community College scored six total in both innings, with four in the bottom of the fourth and two in the bottom of the fifth. Marino scored in the top of the fourth on an error by Torrech, while Sidriyen stole home in the top of the fifth. Tannenbaum and Rodriguez scored in the bottom of the fourth on an error by De Jesus Lebron, then Cummins had an RBI single to right field, and Roque an RBI sacrifice fly. Carabello unloaded a two-run home run to left field in the bottom of the fifth.
 
Thomas Wojnarowski picked up the victory for the Tigers, allowing nine hits and seven runs (five earned) over five innings with four strikeouts and no walks. Miguel Baez pitched two innings of relief, allowing one hit and striking out two.
