Brooklyn, New York - The BMCC men's volleyball program couldn't have asked for a better start to their inaugural season in 2024, defeating Region 15 opponent Kingsborough Community College 3-1 (25-13, 21-25, 25-19, 25-22) on Saturday afternoon at Kingsborough Gymnasium in Brooklyn, New York. The Panthers are a 1-0 (1-0 Region XV) with the win, while the Wave drop to 0-2 (0-2 Region XV).
The Panthers offense came out firing, with two players registering double-digit kill efforts and one putting up a double-double. Freshman Chong Lin Li spearheaded the offensive effort with a double-double, smashing a team-high 15 kills to go along with 15 digs. Classmate Jonathan Duarte (Bogota, Colombia) uncorked 13 kills and hit .706 in the match.
Freshman Hugo Paz (Mexico City, Mexico) dished out a team-best 42 assists and tied his three teammates, Edwin Martinez (Bronx, New York), Isah Mohammed (Lagos, Nigeria), and Emmanuel Lovingood (Queens, New York), with a team-high two service aces.
Underclassman Eugene Villarruz (Queens, New York) led the Panthers defensively with a team-high 19 digs. Mohammed recorded a team-best four solo blocks, while Duarte and Lovingood also contributed three solo blocks.
The Panthers hit .386 for the match (47K-15E-83TA), including a match-best .611 in the first set and .588 in the fourth set.
