BMCC Baseball Suffers Pair Of Heartbreaking Losses In Doubleheader Sweep On Monday

Brooklyn, New York – The BMCC Baseball team had a heartbreaking afternoon. The Panthers took leads in the bottom of the fifth and seven innings in both games against CUNYAC opponent Queensborough Community College only to see the Tigers rally and win both ends of the doubleheader 9-7 and 12-11 on Monday afternoon at Kingsborough Athletics Field. The Tigers picked up their first two victories of the year, improving to 2-6 (2-6 CUNYAC), while the two losses dropped the Panthers to 2-10 (2-8 CUNYAC).

Game 1 – Queensborough Community College 9, Borough of Manhattan 7
The Panther's offense got right to work in the top of the first inning as sophomore Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) led off with a groundball double to left field, and freshman Peter Marino (New York, New York) singled before fellow freshman Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) uncorked an RBI single to give the Panthers the early 1-0 lead. Marino would steal home, and classmate Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) would drive in Mattera on an RBI single to give BMCC a 3-0 lead. After Queensborough Community College responded with a four-run bottom in the second inning to take their first lead of 4-3 before BMCC rallied to go back in front 6-4 with three runs in the top of the third. Sophomore Maxwell Jimenez (Dominican Republic) and Mattera would record back-to-back singles. Next, Roldan ripped an RBI single to tie it at four before freshman Luis Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) and Reyes registered two straight RBI singles to stretch the advantage to 6-4. The Panthers would remain in front 6-5 after three when the Tigers grabbed one more run in the bottom of the inning. The Panthers increased their lead to 7-5 in the top of the fifth when Leonardo Alvarez walked in Marino before the Tigers went back in front with a four-run inning in the bottom of the fifth to lead 9-7. BMCC would have two more chances in the top of the sixth and seventh, but Alvarez would retire the Panthers in order twice, preserving the 9-7 win for Queensborough.

The Panthers racked up 12 hits in the game, with four players recording multi-hit games led by a team-best three hits from Reyes and RoldanReyes put up his team-leading sixth multi-hit performance with a double and triple in the contest, while Roldan drove in a team-high two runs. Mattera also posted his fifth multi-hit game of the season, and Ramirez put up his first of the year.

Game 2 – Queensborough Community College 12, Borough of Manhattan 11
The Panthers would not be discouraged in game two of their doubleheader, grabbing the early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning. After sophomore Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) led off with a single and freshman Peter Marino (New York, New York) got aboard with a walk, classmate Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) ripped a triple to center field, scoring both to make it 3-0. The Tigers would add two runs in the bottom of the first to cut the deficit to one, 3-2, before adding two runs in the bottom of the third and fourth to stretch their lead to 6-3 going into the top of the fifth. The Panthers would ring up three straight runs, with two in the top of the fifth and one in the top of the sixth to tie it at six. Mattera blasted an RBI double to right field after classmate Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) got aboard with a double of his own to center field and then scored on an error to get the deficit down to 6-5. Marino would even it up on an RBI single in the top of the sixth to tie it at six. Queensborough would go off for four runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 10-6, with BMCC's last licks coming up in the top of the seventh. The Panthers would not go away, exploding for a five-run top of the seventh inning to retake the lead 11-10. With BMCC down to their last out, sophomore Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) fought off six pitches and singled to third base to get the Panthers a baserunner. Rodriguez-Reyes would come through right after knocking a single to left field with the top of the order coming up. Reyes wasted no time once he stepped into the batter's box, blasting a three-run homer over the left field fence to tie it up at 10. After Marino reached on an error, Mattera drilled an RBI double to left field to put the Panthers back in front 11-10 going into the final inning. After a Gerardo Galan Berihuete (Brooklyn, New York) balk allowed the tying run to come across, Sean Lynch ripped a walk-off RBI single to center field to win it for the Tigers 12-11.
