Bronx, New York - BMCC Baseball's two-game winning streak was ended by Bronx Community College 22-3 in CUNYAC action Thursday afternoon at Ohio Field. The Broncos pick up their first win of the season, improving to 1- 8 (1-4 CUNYAC), while the Panthers drop to 2-3 (2-1 CUNYAC).
Hits were tough to come by on the afternoon, with freshman
Peter Marino (New York, New York) leading the way with a team-high two hits in four at-bats while sophomores
Gerardo Galan Berihuete (Brooklyn, New York) and
Maxwell Jimenez (Dominican Republic) and freshman
Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) all connected for doubles on the afternoon.
Berihuete and
Suarez joined
Marino with one RBI apiece.
Jordy Garcia got off to a strong start on the mound for Bronx Community College in the top of the first, retiring three of the four batters he faced while allowing one hit. The Broncos provided him a strong cushion exploding for 11 runs in the bottom of the first and batting around the order. Wilkin Ruan led off the bottom of the inning with a single and scored the game's opening run on a
Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) error. Leonardo Francisco and Angel Calderon would connect on an RBI double and single to extend the Bronco advantage to 3-0. After the Broncos drew back-to-back walks, Abel Ruan brought Calderon across on an RBI single to make it 4-0 before Raul Chevalier was walked in to make it 5-0. Luis Roman Sanchez would score an error, and Steven Correa ripped a two-run double to make it 8-0. After another error scored Ruan to make it 9-0, Calderon uncorked a two-run single to make it 11-0 after one inning.
Jimenez got the Panther's offense off to a stronger start in the top of the second inning with a leadoff double before being brought across the plate for the Panther's first run on a Suarez double to make it 11-1. Berihuete wasted no time stepping into the batter's box next, ripping an RBI double to the left field to make the score 11-2 going into the bottom of the second.
The Panthers would allow only two runs in the bottom of the second on an error, and Ruan sacrifice fly RBI to make it 13-2 going into the top of the third. The Panthers would go down 1-2-3 in the top of the inning, then after Francisco led off with a double to center field, Calderon would bring him across on an RBI single to make it 14-2. Freshman
Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) would retire three of the final four batters he faced striking out two of them to end the third.
The Panthers couldn't threaten in the top of the fourth as Garcia retired three of the four hitters he faced and stuck out
Suarez to end the inning and keep the score 14-2. Correa unloaded an RBI double after a leadoff walk from Ruan to stretch the lead to 15-2 before Roldan would get out of a jam with help from Berihuete, picking off Correa trying to steal third and getting Samuel De La Rosa to fly out to Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) and Calderon to pop out to
Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) to end the inning.
The Broncos added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth when Ruan drilled a two-run single, and Correa recorded an RBI single to make it 18-2. Bronx C.C. produced another four runs in the bottom of the sixth as Ruan blasted a three-run triple to clear the bases, and Suarez put up an RBI single to make it 22-2.
The Panthers would add one more run in the top of the seventh on a
Marino RBI single as the Bronx shut the door for a 22-3 victory.
Garcia had an outstanding outing for the Broncos picking up his first victory, going six innings, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out seven, and walking one.
Mattera took the loss for the Panthers, surrendering ten runs on five hits over one-third of an inning, striking out one. Roldan was strong out of the bullpen going 3.2 innings and allowing five runs on four hits while striking out four and walking three.
Sophomore Adrian Beckles (Bronx, New York) also came in relief, allowing six hits and seven runs while walking four and striking out two.
The Panthers will look to return to their winning ways tomorrow Friday March 31 against Bronx Community College at noon at Ohio Field in Bronx, New York. For more information, please visit the
