BMCC Baseball Team Rallies To Take Lead But Cannot Hold Off Bronx Community College On The Road

Bronx, New York The BMCC Baseball trailed 5-0 but came back with a seven-run fifth inning to take the lead on Friday afternoon against CUNYAC opponent Bronx Community College at Ohio Field, but the hosts scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and four more in the bottom of the seventh to pull away 12-7. The Bronco's second straight win improves their record to 2-8 (2-4 CUNYAC), while the Panthers drop to 2-4 (2-2 CUNYAC) with the loss.

Freshman Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) put up his second multi-hit game of the season with a team-best two hits with one double, while sophomores Frank Reyes (Brooklyn, New York) and Abdel Raheem Dolah (Brooklyn, New York) and freshman Peter Marino (New York, New York) each had a hit. Reyes also had a triple, and Marino smacked a double in the contest while Reyes led all players with his team-high third multi-RBI game with a team-best of three RBIs.

Rodriguez-ReyesMarino, and sophomore Maxwell Jimenez (Dominican Republic) all drove in one run apiece. Reyes, Jimenez, and Marino led the Panthers defensive effort with a team-best tied four putouts each.

Reyes was able to get aboard in the top of the first when he reached on an error by Leonardo Francisco, but starter Alex Messon shut the door retiring three straight batters going into the bottom of the inning. The Bronx got right to work offensively as Wilkin Ruan led off with a walk, then stole second and was brought home by an Albel Ruan triple to left field to make it 1-0 Bronx Community College. Panther starter freshman Marino was able to shut the door right after retiring the last two batters to keep it a one-run game after one.

After holding the Panthers scoreless in the top of the second inning, the Broncos added four more runs in the bottom of the inning. Luis Roman Sanchez was walked in to make it 2-0, and then Steven Correa uncorked a base-clearing three-run double to make it 5-0 after two.

Both teams would go scoreless in the next two innings before BMCC mounted a ferocious comeback with a seven-run inning in the top of the fifth to take their first lead, 7-5. Freshman Nicholas Mattera (Moorpark, California) reached on an error from Bob Ruan on a fly ball to get aboard with one away, then Raheem Dolah knocked a single to move him over to third before he was brought in for the Panther's first run on a Jimenez Sacrifice fly. After back-to-back walks, Rodriguez-Reyes was hit by a pitch, and Raheem Dolah scored to make it 5-2. Freshman Luis Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) was walked in to score classmate Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) to make it 5-3. Reyes didn't wait long after a Broncos pitching change, blasting a base-clearing three-run triple to give BMCC their first lead of the afternoon, 6-5, and then was brought across home plate on an RBI double from Marino.

Bronx Community College got within a run in the bottom of the fifth. After Ramirez turned a double play for BMCC, Angel Calderon ripped a double. He came across home plate after two straight walks when Raul Chevalier grounded into a fielder's choice to have the deficit down to 7-6 going into the top of the sixth.

James Santiago retired three of the following four batters he faced in the top of the sixth. The Broncos would take the lead for good in the bottom of the inning, tacking on two runs when Ruan reached on an error by Rodriguez-Reyes, then Francisco unloaded an RBI single to put Bronx C.C. back in front 8-7.

The Broncos pulled away with four more runs in the bottom of the seventh as Samuel De La Rosa delivered an RBI single as a pinch hitter to stretch the lead to 9-7. Then a Reyes error increased the lead to 10-7 before Ruan connected for a two-run single to make it 12-7.

Santiago held the Panthers hitless and scoreless the last two innings to give Bronx Community College the 12-7 victory.

Santiago got the victory for the Bronx Community College, allowing two hits and one run over four and a third innings while striking out four. Alex Messon got the ball to start for the Broncos, going four strong innings allowing zero runs on two hits to go along with four strikeouts.

Marino pitched a heck of a game for the Panthers and kept them in the game, going five innings, allowing six runs on six hits, and striking out two on a season-high 92 pitches. Freshman Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) pitched two innings in relief, allowing six runs on three hits while walking four and striking out one.

The Panthers will head on the road for their next two games of a four-game set against 2022 CUNYAC CC Baseball Champion and No.11 nationally ranked Kingsborough Community College on Tuesday, April 4, at 3:30 at Kingsborough Athletics Field.
