New York, New York – The BMCC women's volleyball team traveled to nine-time CUNYAC Champion and Perennial NJCAA power Queensborough Community College on Tuesday evening, looking to make a program-defining statement and end a 17-match winless streak against the Tigers. This match served as a measuring stick for this 2022 Panthers team, but they had a different idea coming out firing from the opening serve and proving that they were for real, defeating the Tigers in straight sets 25-23,25-13, and 26-24.
BMCC's fifth consecutive victory and first over Queensborough since 2012 and in regular season play since 2011 improved their record to 6-2 (3-0 CUNYAC) while the Tigers fell to 5-4 (3-1).
Freshman
Josanne Lewis (Rochester, Minnesota) and sophomore
Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) paced the Panther's offensive attack, both posting their sixth straight double-double.
Lewis spearheaded the offensive attack smashing a team-high 16 kills to go along with a team-best tied 13 digs on defense.
Doci dished out a team-high 23 assists and corralled 12 digs while placing a team-high eight service aces, with five of them in the first set.
Underclassman Emmanuella Aurel (New York, New York) recorded the game-winning kill in the match and finished with six total on the evening while tying a team-best defensively with 13 digs. Johana Boleaga Ramirez (Brooklyn, New York) contributed offensively with three kills for the Panthers in the match.
The Panthers raced out of the gates in the opening set, registering the match's first seven points, with five of them coming off of service aces by Doci. After BMCC stretched their lead to 10-4, Queensborough responded with an 11-4 run to cut the deficit down to one, 15-14. The Panthers would record six of the following 10 points to take a 21-20 lead before the Tigers posted three consecutive points to take a 23-22 lead. Finally, BMCC rolled off the last five points of the set to take it 25-23.
The Panthers dominated the second set jumping out to a 7-3 lead and building it to as large as 17-6 en route to a 25-13 victory in set number two.
The Tigers would not go away in the third set erasing a 4-0 deficit with a 6-1 run to take the lead 6-5. BMCC registered three of the next four points to lead 8-7 before QCC rallied to tie it at 11. The third frame would be tied four more times with three different lead changes.
After a Tiger attack error gave BMCC a 15-14 lead, QCC would get the following two points to go in front 16-15 after a Doci service error. The Panthers would score the final three points in set number, with Aurel's left-handed swing clinching the program's first victory against the Tigers in 10 years, 26-24, to take the match three sets to none.
Brianna Griffiths led the offensive effort for Queensborough Community College uncorking a team-best seven kills. Desiree Morales handed out a team-high 16 assists and tied another with Darlyn Pacheco and Haley Castaneda with two service aces. Angelica Hernandez and Ana Duran led the Tigers on defense with 10 digs and four blocks.
The BMCC women's volleyball team will look to extend their winning streak to the biggest in program history six when they travel on the road to CUNYAC opponent Hostos C.C. on Thursday, September 29 at 7 p.m at the Swamp. For more information, please visit the BMCC Women's Volleyball Schedule Page.
