Garden City, New York – After two tough back-to-back losses at home, the BMCC women's volleyball team traveled to Garden City, New York, looking to right the ship on Saturday afternoon. The Panthers provided a robust response sweeping their second Region 15 double dual against Hostos Community College and Nassau Community College in four sets. The Panthers reach double-digit victories for the first time since the 2017 season improving to 11-4 (11-2 Region XV), while the Caimans fall to 6-11 (4-8 Region 15), and the Lions drop to 2-13 (2-8 Region XV) with the loss.
The Panthers got a complimentary effort in the first match on the afternoon, with three players recording double-doubles. Sophomore Josanne Lewis (Rochester, Minnesota) put up her team-leading tenth leading all swingers with a game-high 12 kills to go along with 20 digs, while classmate Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) registered her eighth double-double with a game-best 26 assists and had 10 digs to go along with six service aces. Freshman Albina Rugova (New York, New York) posted the first double-double of her career, placing a career and game-high 11 service aces to go along with 12 digs.
In addition, freshman Jamielee Adomo (Bronx, New York) smashed seven kills, and classmate Emmanuella Aurel (New York, New York) hit a game-best .364 (7K-3E-11TA) with seven kills of her own.
The Panther's defense had five players with 10 or more digs, with Aurel serving as the Panther's rock on the backline corralling a game-best 30 digs, while Lewis had 20 digs and freshman Sarah Lee (Staten Island, New York) grabbed 19.
The Panthers took the first two sets 25-14 and 25-7, with Rugova dropping nine of her career-best 11 service aces in the second set. After the Caimans took the third set 25-18, the Panthers closed the door with a dominant 25-11 result in the fourth to take the match 3-1.
Hostos Community College was led on offense by Jasmine Garcia, who uncorked a team-high seven kills, and Nicole Rosas had a team-best two service aces. Ashley Cabral gave out a team-best seven assists, while Garcia and Rosas led the defense with a team-high 12 digs apiece.
Sophomore Josanne Lewis (Rochester, Minnesota) continued her offensive domination in the Panther's second match recording her team-best 11th double-double, blasting a game-high 19 kills and a .654 hitting percentage to go along with 20 digs. Classmate Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) made it back-to-back double-doubles dishing out a game-high 36 assists to go along with 16 digs.
Lewis and freshman Emanuella Aurel (New York, New York) both placed a team-best four service aces apiece, while underclassman Jamielee Adomo (Bronx, New York) contributed offensively with a career-high eight kills. Aurel also registered eight kills in the match.
The Panthers had another excellent performance from their backline, with five players recording double-digit digs and three players recording 20 or more digs. Aurel led the defense with a team-high 27 digs, while classmates Sarah Lee (Staten Island, New York) and Albina Rugova (New York, New York) corralled 23 and 13. Rugova's 13 digs matched a career-best.
After the Panthers took the first set 25-18, the Lions battled back to take the second 25-20 before BMCC closed out the match, taking the third set 25-18 and the fourth set 25-11.
Notables:
- Josanne Lewis (Rochester, Minnesota) now leads the Panthers with 219 kills, and her total is the second most in a single season, passing Stela Vaso's mark of 196 set in 2016. Lewis also leads the team with 12 double-digit kill games and has 20 or more kills in three contests this season, while she is second in the country with 4.87 Kills Per Set.
- Lewis is second in digs with 199, which is the fourth most in a single season, passing Yolireisi Pichardo's mark of 197. She has recorded three straight double-digit dig games and has back-to-back 20 dig performances. She currently has 11 double-digit dig games on the season.
- Xheni Doci (Saluzzo, Italy) leads the Panthers with 312 assists, which is fifth most in a single season passing Kaylin Nieves's mark of 297 set during the 2019 season. Doci leads the Panthers with 12 double-digit assist performances, three 30-assist performances, and 10 matches with 20 or more assists. Doci leads the Panthers with 71 service aces and leads the country in service aces per set at 1.54. Her total of 71 service aces is fifth in the country, and she has placed five or more in five of her last seven contests. Doci is also second on the team with eight double-doubles on the season
- Emanuella Aurel (New York, New York) leads the Panthers with 234 Digs and is tied for tops on the team with Cheyenne Gray-Taitt (Harlem, New York) with 18.
- Aurel's mark for digs passes Jennifer Santo's of 204 set in 2014, and she has 10 double-digit dig games with two 30-dig performances.
- Aurel is second with 90 kills and 46 service aces.
- Sarah Lee (Staten Island, New York) has posted three straight double-digit dig games, including three straight and 20 or more in two of her last three contests. Lee has recorded 10 double-digit dig games on the season, and her 196 digs are third on the team and ties Estafani Liz's mark of 196 for fifth most in a single season.
