Watch: WBB Highlights vs. Rockland C.C.
New York, New York | Sophomore
Lauren Malcolm (Bronx, New York) and freshman
Shyasia Preston (Far Rockaway, New York) rewrote the BMCC women's basketball record books on Saturday afternoon as the first two players in the program history to both record 20 points and 20 rebounds in a single-game. Both of their efforts propelled the Panthers' to a second straight victory 74-69, against Rockland Community College at BMCC Gymnasium.
Malcolm and Preston both posted the 20 points and 20 rebounds for the first time in three seasons since Ashley Brooks did it back on Jan. 24, 2017, against Nassau Community College. Malcolm and Preston both ripped down a game-high 20 rebounds apiece and notched double-doubles in the first-half.
Malcolm also drained a game- and career-high 24 points with a career-best 8-for-11 from the charity stripe, while snatching a team-best five steals and tying a team-high with two assists. Her 20 rebounds were five shy of the career-high 25 back on January 16th, 2020 vs. Dutchess Community College.
Preston also posted a career-high 20 points with career-bests shooting from the field (7-for-16) and at the charity stripe (6-for-9). Sophomore Autum Adams-Edwards (Brooklyn, New York) chipped in with 17 points, 12 of them coming in the second half, and tying for a team-high with underclassman Quiana Baez (Queens, New York) with two assists apiece.
The Hawks led by four early, 6-2, but the Panthers answered with the four-straight points to tie it up at 4:18 of the first. Rockland Community College went back in front 10-8 before BMCC closed the quarter on an 8-2 run to lead 16-12 after one. After a back-and-forth second quarter, with the two teams exchanging the lead three times and tying it up to six in the first, the Hawks went into the halftime break with a 36-32 advantage.
Rockland Community College led by their largest lead of the afternoon in the third quarter - five points, 44-39, at 6:35 - before BMCC finished with a furious 19-5 surge - 11 of the points coming from Malcolm and Preston - to take a 58-49 lead into the final 10 minutes. Two Adams-Edwards layups helped the Panther lead hit double-digits for the first time, 62-51, at 8:13 of the fourth quarter and then got to its biggest mark, 12, 66-54 at 5:41.
The Hawks wouldn't go away charging back late with a 12-2 run to cut the deficit to two, 68-66 at 1:25 before the Panthers scored six of the final nine points to close it out.
BMCC dominated on the glass, out-rebounding Rockland Community College 58-41. The Panthers also outscored the Hawks in the paint 38-24 and scored 29 points off of 26 of their turnovers.
For Rockland Community College, four of the starting five scored in double-figures while one recorded a double-double, with Briana Washington leading the way with 23 points. Washington also snatched a game-high seven steals and dished out a game-best six assists in the contest. Thirtsa Jean-Charles registered a double-double, scoring 17 points to go along with a team-best 13 rebounds and a game-high three blocks. Tigist Smith and Kiara Zepada both contributed 17 and 13 in the game.
