New York, New York | After spotting Hostos Community College a 25-point lead, the BMCC men's basketball team put together a furious rally in the game's final 11 minutes, but still fell short 112-102, in CUNYAC play Tuesday night at the Swamp in the Bronx, N.Y. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 3-5
Three of the Panthers starting five reached the 20-point plateau, and all five scored in double-figures, led by Elvys Ceballo's (New York City, New York) career-high 24 points and a game-high tied five three-pointers to go along with five rebounds, four assists, and two steals. Sophomore Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) and freshman Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) both contributed 21 points each, while McBride dished out a team-high eight assists, and Reid snatched a team-best five steals and also gave out seven assists.
Fellow underclassmen Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) recorded his fifth double-double and his third straight, hauling down a game-high 15 rebounds and dropping 15 points to go along with a team-best two blocks. Fellow freshman Jaloni Clark (Staten Island, New York) scored 11 points on the evening.
Hostos Community College scored the first 17 points of the game to dominate the first half and lead 55-36 at halftime. After the Caimans built a 25-point advantage midway through the second half, BMCC dominated the next 11 minutes of the contest by putting together a ferocious rally to cut the deficit to four. Despite outscoring Caimans 66-57 in the final stanza, the Panthers still fell in the end 112-102.
Five players put together double-digit scoring efforts for Hostos Community College, with sophomore Korey Williams notching a triple-double on the night with a game-high 34 points and 11 assists. Williams also ripped down a team-high ten rebounds and tied a game-high with five three-pointers on the night, while Freshman guard Reggie Quezada drained 25 points and had a game-high seven steals. Sophomore forward Mathew Acosta scored 12 points, and freshmen Emmanuel Takyi and Edwin Takyi had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Notables:
- Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) and Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) both have scored in double figures in all eight contests this season, with McBride recording his team-leading fourth 20-point game and Reid posting his first with a season-high 21.
- Five Panther players have scored 20 or more points this season, as Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) and Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) both have three 20-point performances apiece, tied for second on the team.
- Bentinck and Ceballos have seven double-digit scoring performances in eight games this year, with Ceballos recording his sixth straight and Bentinck his five consecutive contest in double-figures.
- Bentinck recorded his team-leading fifth double-double of the season, including his third straight.
- BMCC has had three or more players score in double-figures in all eight games this season.
