Watch:Â Sophomore Guard Terrance McBride's Game-Winning Three-Pointer
Watch: MBB Highlights vs. Bronx C.C.
New York, New York | Freshman forward Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) went off on Tuesday evening, with his fourth consecutive double-double to lead BMCC Men's Basketball to a comeback victory, 82-81, against CUNYAC foe Bronx Community College at BMCC Gymnasium. The win snaps a two-game losing skid for the Panthers, improving their record to 4-5 (2-2 CUNYAC), while the Broncos fall to 3-8 (1-2 CUNYAC).Â
Bentinck achieved the Panther's first 20 rebound game in two seasons since forward Victor Kovacevic did it back on January 20, 2018. Bentinck ripped down a career-high 25 boards on the night and drained a career-best 30 points while tying for a game-high with two blocks. His 25 rebounds are two shy of the BMCC's single-game record of 27 set by Jericho Cherisma on January 21, 2017, vs. Dutchess Community College.
Sophomore Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) put together his second straight 20-point effort with 26 while dishing out a team-best six assists and tying a team-high with two steals. Freshman Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) and William Brown (Brooklyn, New York) both tied a team-high with two steals apiece, while Brown handled a career-high nine rebounds, and Reid grabbed five. Classmate Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) tied for a team-best with two blocks and scored nine points.
After four different lead changes a minute and a half into the contest, Bronx Community College stretched their lead to six twice on two jumper shots, before a McBride three-pointer at 17:16 trimmed that advantage down to three. Then the Broncos put together a 15-5 run over the next 4:58 to build their largest lead of the game, 13, 28-15, on a jumper at 12:18.Â
The Panthers responded with a 7-2 run to get the deficit down to nine, 30-21, on a Bentinck layup at 10:21, before the Bronx scored five of the next seven points get their advantage back to double-digits for a second-time 35-23. BMCC roared back with a 9-2 surge- seven points coming from Bentinck (2 FGS and 2-3 FT) and McBride going 1-for-2 at the line- over the next 3:43 to get the Bronco lead back to single digits, 37-31 with 5:44 remaining. After a Bronco three at 4:52 moved the lead back to double-digits for the third time, 42-31, the Panthers would score nine of the final 13 points of the half to trail 46-40 at halftime.
After the Broncos doubled up the lead for the fourth time, 55-45, on a layup at 16:10, the Panthers exploded with a 13-1 run over the next three and a half minutes to tie it at 56 on a McBride layup at 12:40 and take their first lead since 56 seconds into the first half, 58-56, on a jumper from Bentinck at 11:43. Brown would nail a layup at 11:17 to extend the BMCC lead to four, 60-56, then the Bronx would score six straight points - three-pointer and 2-for-3 at the line - to tie it at 60 at 10:23 and go back in front 62-60 at 10:02. McBride buried a field goal to tie it back at 62 at 9:42, and then the Broncos would lead for by no more than five over the next 6:46 before he would tie it up again at 78 with a layup at 2:28.
Bronx Community College would hit a three 20 seconds after to go back in front 81-78. After Bentinck went 1-for-2 on a one and one at 1:52 to get the Bronco lead down to 81-79, McBride took a feed off an offensive rebound from Reid at the top of the key and nailed an off-balance three-pointer to give the Panthers the lead for good 82-81. The Bronx would have four more chances to win it, but Bentinck swatted away a jumper with three seconds to go and forced another to hit off the side of the backboard at the horn to give BMCC an exciting come from behind win.Â
Bronx Community College had four players score in double-figures, with two of them reaching the 20-point mark on the night, led by sophomore guard Tilquan Rucker's 24 points. Rucker also knocked down a team-high four three-pointers and snatched a game-high six steals.
