New York, New York | The BMCC men's basketball team was defeated by Regional opponent Dutchess Community College, 86-84, in a seesaw battle on Saturday afternoon at BMCC Gymnasium. With the loss, the Panthers drop to 3-4 (2-3 Region XV), while the Falcons improve to 3-4 (2-3 Region XV).

Two Panther freshmen recorded double-doubles on the afternoon, as Malik Bentinck (Queens, New York) posted his second straight and fourth of the year, with a career-high and team-high tied 21 points to go along with 11 boards, while classmate Shakeem Reid (Brooklyn, New York) brought down a game-high 14 rebounds and scored 13 points. Sophomore Terrance McBride (Brooklyn, New York) scored 18 points and recorded eight rebounds and assists apiece to go along with three blocks.

Fellow underclassman Elvys Ceballos (New York City, New York) drained a team-high tied 21 points, while also tying a team-high with fellow freshman Jaloni Clark (Staten Island, New York) snatching three steals apiece.

BMCC started hot, jumping out to a ten-point lead, 16-6, in the opening three and half minutes on a McBride layup at 16:20. The Panthers built the largest lead of their game twice with two three-pointers by Clark at 14:07 to make it 23-11 and after a Ceballos trey at 11:47 to extend the advantage back to 26-15.

Dutchess constructed a 12-2 run over the next four minutes, while holding BMCC to just two points, and used back-to-back layups to get within three, 28-25, at 8:03 and then within one, 28-27 at 7:08. After a Kadeem Jones (Jamaica, Queens) jumper extended the Panther lead to four, 31-27, the Falcons went on an 11-2 run to grab their first lead 34-33 at 3:40 and stretched it 38-33 at 2:45.

A 6-0 BMCC run got them within one, 39-38, at 1:28, before Dutchess responded with the final seven points to lead 45-39 at halftime.

The Panthers opened the second half with four of the first six points to trim the margin down to 47-43, then Dutchess scored four straight points to lead 52-43 at 18:31, their largest lead of the game. The Panthers would roar back with a 14-4 run to regain the lead 57-56 on a Reid layup at 12:16 before the Falcons retook ten seconds later 58-57 on a layup.

BMCC would score the next five points — 2-for-2 from the line from Bentinck at 11:48 and on a McBride three-pointer at 9:12 — to extend their lead out to four, 62-58. Dutchess got it within one twice, 62-61 and 65-64, before tying it at 67 all on a three-pointer at 7:12. After an 8-2 Panther's run stretched the lead back out to 75-69, the Falcons would rally with 10-3 over the next 1:42 to regain the advantage by one, 79-78, and led after it for good.

BMCC would not go quietly down the stretch in the final minutes and got within two twice when Reid went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line to make it 81-79 and on a Bentinck layup with 19 seconds remaining to get it to 86-84. After two Dutchess missed free throws, the Panthers had a chance to win it at the buzzer with 12 seconds left but, McBride missed a layup, and Bentinck's follow didn't go allowing Dutchess to escape 86-84.

All five starters from Dutchess Community College scored in double-figures, led by freshman guard Stephon McGill's game-high 29 points. McGill also distributed a team-high five assists and snatched a game-high four steals, while tying a team-high with five rebounds. Sophomore guards Isaiah Kostyal and Daniel Duffy posted 18 points and 14 points respectively, while classmate Sean Duffy scored 11 points and grabbed a team-high tied five boards and sophomore Quentin Chapman also scored 11.
