Garden City, NY | This weekend was filled to the brim with BMCC athletics action, with the Panthers soccer team taking on the Bronx Broncos at Ohio Field and the Lady Panthers volleyball set for a tri-match against the Nassau Lions and Suffolk Sharks. The men's soccer team kept their perfect record intact with a 2-1 defeat of the Broncos, while the volleyball team picked up an important win against the Sharks.
The first match of the doubleheader turned into a five set thriller against Nassau that saw the Lions escaping by the narrowest of margins with a 16-14 win in the fifth set tiebreaker. While the home team came away with the win, several Lady Panthers players set new season highs. Freshman
Jennifer Chacon was seemingly always in a perfect position as she set her teammates up with a match-high 39 assists and
Adamanais Rodriguez played a huge role in BMCC service game with 5 aces in the match.
In the second half of the doubleheader, the Lady Panthers controlled the match with a consistent offensive attack from
Stela Vaso and
Sara Lazo, the two combined for 29 kills and 11 service aces in the four set victory.
Jennifer Chacon added on to her impressive day with 30 more assists to go along with a team-high 6 aces. After playing their past 6 matches on the road, the Lady Panthers will return home BMCC Gymnasium this Saturday for a tri-match against two CUNYAC opponents, the Queensborough Tigers and Kingsborough Wave.
Following a hot start to the season during which the Panthers have outscored their opponents 32-5 en route to a six match win streak, Coach Seck and the men's soccer team made certain not to look past the 1-3 Broncos and become a victim of a trap game.
Brando Guzman provided all of the offensive firepower needed for the win with a pair of unassisted goals coming in the first half. This allowed the Panthers to defend for the remainder of the match to come away with their seventh consecutive victory. BMCC will be back in action when the men's and women's soccer teams travel upstate to Dutchess Community College for a doubleheader against the Falcons.
