Panthers Outlast Bulldogs

Box Score
The 2012 Lady Panthers of BMCC opened the season with an out of region match-up vs. the Bulldogs of Bergen Community College.  The Panthers opened the first half with an all-out defensive effort which included 4 turnovers for the Bulldogs and holding their opponent to 18 first half points.  Offensively, the Panthers put up 25 points led by 7 first half points for Luye Murphy(Freshman, Brooklyn, NY) and Denea Fleary(Sophomore, Jamaica, NY) and took a 25-18 lead after 20 minutes of play.  The second half saw the offensive output for both teams increase as each team traded baskets throughout the half.  With the game in the balance and the Panthers up 54-53 with 10 seconds remaining on the clock the Bulldogs were forced to foul Denea Fleary and hope she would miss the first of her 1 in 1 free throws.  After a timeout was taken by the Bulldogs, Denea stepped up to the line and calmly nailed the first free throw.  With the lead now 55-53, Bergen once again called a full timeout in an attempt to freeze Denea.  As the Panthers coach, Veronica Sherman, drew up the defensive scheme for the final 10 seconds the Panthers broke the huddle and approached the free throw line.  Denea nailed the second free throw as well and pushed the lead to 56-53.  Bergen was able to push the ball up the court and take a last second three pointer which hit off the side of the rim for a Panthers season opening victory as the crowd of 100 exploded in excitement.

With the win, the Lady Panthers start the season 1-0 as they prepare for a Region XV home match-up this Saturday, at 12:30pm against the Generals of Sullivan County Community College.  Come out and support your Lady Panthers!!!
