Panthers Drop Region 15 Road Contest At Suffolk C.C., Casana Posts Third Straight Multi-Hit Game

Selden, New York - On Friday afternoon, the BMCC Baseball team was defeated 15-5 by NJCAA Division III No. 14 nationally ranked Suffolk County Community College in Region 15 action. The loss dropped the Panthers to 2-15 (2-15 Region XV), while the Sharks moved to 21-13 (11-3 Region XV) with the win.

Freshman Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) and sophomore Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) led the Panthers offense on the afternoon. Casana registered his third straight multi-hit game and team-leading seventh of the season with two hits, including his team-best seventh double, while Roldan drove in a team-high two runs.

Casana's seven doubles tied him for second-most in a single season with Frank Reyes and sixth all-time with Wilson Aristy and Kevin Hernandez. Roldan has posted three RBIs in the two matchups against Suffolk Community College this week.

The Panthers also stole five bases in the game with sophomore Peter Marino (New York, New York) and freshmen Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Michael Marra (Staten Island, NY), Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY), and Casana all recording one apiece. Marino moved into a tie for sixth all-time with Randy Berroa with 20 career steals.

Marino's 30th career hit moved him alone into 10th all-time in program history, passing Rafael Ballenilla and Kevin Tapia's mark of 29 career hits.

Marino also led the Panthers on defense with five putouts.

Daniel DeBruin picked up his second victory of the year for the Sharks, making it challenging for Panther batters all day as he allowed two runs (all earned) on two hits with six strikeouts and two walks in six innings of work.

Sophomore Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) took the loss, going two innings and allowing nine runs (all earned) on six hits with five walks. Marra came out of the bullpen to pitch four innings, allowing six runs (all earned) on three hits with eight walks and a strikeout.

The Sharks got off to a fast start with two runs in the bottom of the first and seven in the bottom of the second. Dominick Viggiano helped Suffolk open the scoring with an RBI single to left field, then Lucas Quinlan recorded a Sacrifice fly RBI to make it 2-0 after one. The Sharks Joseph Lomonaco scored when Dominic LaFroscia grounded into a double play to make it 3-0, and then Ryan Sitler scored on a passed ball to make it 4-0. Quinlan and Jake Tannenbaum recorded RBIs on back-to-back at-bats with a double and single to make it 6-0. Then Lomonaco connected for a three-run single to make it 9-0 after two.

After both teams were held scoreless in the third inning, the Panthers finally broke through in the top of the fourth with two outs to get the deficit to 9-2, with Roldan picking up an RBI on a ground out and DeJesus Lebron scoring on a wild pitch. Suffolk scored five runs in the bottom of the inning and added another in the bottom of the fifth to make it a 15-2 lead. BMCC grabbed three runs in the top of the seventh when Casana and De Jesus Lebron were walked in, and Roldan ripped an RBI single but couldn't do any more damage in the inning as Suffolk closed them out, winning 15-5.

BMCC's Region 15 doubleheader tomorrow against Suffolk Community College has been moved due to inclement weather to Sunday, April 28, at noon and 3 p.m. in Selden, New York. The Panthers hit the diamond again in CUNYAC play on Monday, April 22, against Bronx Community College at 3:30 p.m. at Ohio Field. For more information, please visit the BMCC Baseball Schedule Page.
