Brooklyn, New York – The BMCC baseball team was swept in their CUNYAC road doubleheader against Kingsborough Community College 9-2 and 18-6 on Saturday afternoon at Kingsborough Athletics Field. The Panthers are now 2-12 (2-8 CUNYAC), while the Wave improved to 14-12 (11-1 CUNYAC) with the win.
Game 1 - Kingsborough Community College 9, Borough of Manhattan 2
The Panthers had three players with multi-hit games, with sophomore
Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York) and freshmen
Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.) and
Isaiah Jerry (Brooklyn, NY) collecting two hits apiece.
De Jesus Lebron put up his team-leading fourth multi-hit game, and Jerry ripped his first double of the season. De Jesus Lebron and classmate Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) both drove in one run each
, and sophomore Jeffrey Roldan (New York, New York) had a hit in game one.
The Wave jumped out to a 4-0 lead, grabbing one run in the bottom of the first and three in the bottom of the second.
Marino struck out two of the first three batters he faced in the bottom of the first, then Yoskar Guzman was able to get aboard after the lead-off batter was fanned after a five-pitch duel before being brought across home plate when Jerry misplayed a fly ball from Thomas Laino making it 1-0. Luciano Lobello's three run inside the park home run stretched the Kingsborough lead to 4-0 after two innings of play.
The Wave got two more runs in the bottom of the fourth to extend their lead to 6-0 when Victor Perez and LoBello scored when Guzman reached on an error. The Panthers would trim the deficit to 6-2 in the top of the fifth with
DeJesus Lebron and Casana RBIs. Roldan singled to center field with one out, then Rodriguez-Reyes got aboard with a bunt single. After Marino loaded the bases up when he reached on an error, DeJesus Lebron singled to center field, and then Casana registered a Sacrifice fly RBI before Marino was thrown out to stop BMCC from doing more damage in the inning.
BMCC wouldn't get any closer as the Wave added a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to take game one 9-2.
Freshman
Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY) led the Panthers on defense with a team-high five putouts.
Andrew Ardito picked up his second victory of the season for the Wave, going six innings, including five scoreless innings, and allowing six hits and two runs (zero earned) with four strikeouts and no walks.
Sophomore
Peter Marino (New York, New York) demonstrated his unwavering commitment on the mound, battling against a formidable Kingsborough Community College offense.
Marino delivered over 100 pitches for the third consecutive start, allowing eight hits and nine runs, with three earned with four strikeouts and three walks.
Marino now has an impressive 40 career strikeouts in nine appearances, surpassing
Christopher Rodriguez's record of
39 strikeouts from 2017 to 2019.
Game 2 - Kingsborough Community College 18, Borough of Manhattan 6
The Panthers posted their fourth 10-hit performance of the season, with two having multi-hit games and seven registering a hit overall. Sophomore Peter Marino (New York, New York) posted the Panther's fifth three-hit game this season and his team-leading second of the year. Freshman Wiljer Casana (Miami, Florida) connected for her team-leading fourth double of the season and team-best fifth multi-hit game. Marino stole his team-high 11th base of the season and recorded his second double.
Freshman
Nassaiah Flores (Bronx, NY) led the Panthers with two RBIs in game two, while classmate
Michael Marra (Staten Island, NY),
Marino and
Casana each drove in one run. Flores,
Jose Miguel De Jesus Lebron (Santo Domingo, D.R.), Peter Rodriguez Reyes (Bronx, New York),
Julio Liz (Bronx, NY), and
Jariel Irizarry (New York, NY) each had a hit.
The Panthers jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first. After
Marino and
Casana got aboard with singles Flores ripped an RBI single to short to get BMCC on the board first. Marra was hit by a pitch to load the bases up, but the Panthers couldn't get any more production in the inning. Isaiah Jerry (Brooklyn, NY) struck out looking, and
Adonis Suarez (Queens, New York) lined into a double play, keeping it 1-0 going into the bottom of the first.
The Wave responded with six runs on three hits in the bottom of the first, headlined by a three-run double by Andrew Ardito that tied it and put Kingsborough up 3-1 before Nasir Useini recorded an RBI single to stretch it to 4-1 and grab to more runs to make it 6-1 going into the top of the second. The Wave added four more runs in the bottom of the second to make it 10-1 and eight runs in the bottom of the third to make it 18-2.
The Panthers scored two runs in the top of the fourth, as Irizarry scored on differential indifference and a
Casana RBI double. They scored two more in the top of the fifth inning on a
Marino RBI single and when
Flores was walked in, making the score 18-6, which would remain the final score for game two.
Casana, Irizarry, and Liz all led the Panthers on defense with a team-best tied three putouts apiece.
Gio Loiacono grabbed the victory for the Wave, allowing seven hits and four runs over four innings with six strikeouts and one walk over four innings. Roldan took the loss for the Panthers, pitching two innings, while
Joseph Estrella (Bronx, New York) pitched two innings in relief, allowing four hits and three runs (all earned) with a career-high three strikeouts and three walks.
